This work is concerned with the ecology of exploited fish populations. It takes a broad view of the subject, including a consideration of fish as elements in a delicately-balanced ecosystem. It also discusses the economics of fisheries in terms of a throughput of both energy and finance.

The African lakes are an extremely important ecosystem and the subject of much study relating to species introductions and loss of biodiversity. This text examines the effect that species changes has on such ecosystems. It should be of interest to fish biologists, fisheries scientists, ecologists, freshwater biologists, conservation biologists and environmental scientists.

If judged by a dismaying track record, and a consequent downturn in the reputation of fisheries scientists, fisheries management is certainly a candidate for calls for reinvention. Fish communities are shifting towards small rapid-growing species. These symptoms have been accopmanied by a series of fisheries collapses that have not only been largely unforeseen by our most advanced assessment methods, but have also brought about disastrous economic consequences. Such things have even occurred in Canada, a nation with probably more top-rate fishery scientists "per capita" than any other. So fisheries science is now in a state of flux, and many feel it is at a cross-roads where new paradigms compete for attention and demand evidence of their utility. This book is organized into five section: why does fisheries managment need reinventing?; new policies for a reinvented fisheries management; the role of the social sciences in a reinvented fisheries mangagement; coping with ecology in a reinvented fisheries management; and modelling through in a reinvented fisheries management.

Judged by a dismaying track record and a consequent downturn in the reputation of fisheries scientists, fisheries management is a candidate for reinvention, with many world leaders in this area holding the view that no fishery has ever been properly understood or managed. This study seeks a new paradigm that will place the flux of ideas in perspective and help to choose those that will make fisheries management work. The book was planned at a symposium of over 100 fishery researchers at the Fisheries Centre, University of British Columbia, Vancouver, Canada and is organized into five parts: why does fisheries science need reinventing?; new policies; the role of the social sciences; ecology; modelling.
