Amphoteroglossia
A Poetics of the Twelfth-Century Medieval Greek Novel

This work offers the first systematic and interdisciplinary study of the poetics of the twelfth-century medieval Greek novel. This book investigates the complex ways in which rhetorical theory and practice constructed the overarching cultural aesthetics that conditioned the production and reception of the genre of the novel in twelfth-century Byzantine society. By examining the indigenous rhetorical concept of amphoteroglossia, this book probes unexplored aspects of the re-inscription of inherited allegorical, comic, and rhetorical modes in the Komnenian novels, and offers new methodological directions for the study of Byzantine secular literature in its cultural complexities. The creative re-appropriation of the established generic conventions of the ancient Greek novel by the medieval Greek novelists, it is argued in this wide-ranging study, has invested these works with a dynamic dialogism. In this book, Roilos shows that this interdiscursivity functions on two pivotal axes: on the paradigmatic axis of previously sanctioned ancient Greek and—less evidently but equally significantly—Christian literature, and on the syntagmatic axis of allusions to the broader twelfth-century Byzantine cultural context.

This book explores diverse but complementary interdisciplinary approaches to the poetics, intertexts, and influence of the work of C. P. Cavafy (Konstantinos Kavafis), one of the most important twentieth-century European poets. Written by leading international scholars in a number of disciplines (critical theory, gender studies, comparative literature, English studies, Greek studies, anthropology, classics), the essays of this volume situate Cavafy’s poetry within the broader contexts of modernism and aestheticism and investigate its complex and innovative responses to European literary traditions (from Greek antiquity to modernity) as well as its multifaceted impact on major figures of world literature—from North America to South Africa.Contributors include Eve Sedgwick, Helen Vendler, Dimitrios Yatromanolakis, Richard Dellamora, Mark Doty, James Faubion, Diana Haas, John Chioles, Albert Henrichs, Kathleen Coleman, Michael Paschalis, Peter Jeffreys, and Panagiotis Roilos.

The Greek War of Independence brings together papers from an international conference on the Greek Revolution of 1821, held at Harvard University and the Fletcher School at Tufts University in September 2021. The Greek Revolution marked a pivotal moment in European history: it catalyzed the birth of the modern Greek state, enabled Greeks to reclaim their cultural and national identity after centuries of Ottoman rule, and inspired nationalist movements across the continent. This volume pursues two primary objectives. First, it situates the Greek Revolution within a broader comparative framework, examining its place among modern revolutionary movements. Second, it illuminates neglected dimensions of the political, historical, and cultural forces that precipitated the Greek uprising against Ottoman rule and shaped its ultimate success. Particular attention is devoted to the formation of the Greek state—a process that represented both the culmination of Greek revolutionary struggle and a reconfiguration of diplomatic, geopolitical, and ideological priorities among the European Great Powers. The volume also explores how this foundational moment in Greek nation-state formation has been received, interpreted, and instrumentalized across diverse political, historical, and ideological contexts from 1821 to the present. This book is essential reading for scholars and students in modern European history, comparative revolution studies, political science, and Hellenic studies, as well as readers interested in nationalism, state formation, and the enduring legacies of revolutionary movements.

This book explores early modern Greek literary and wider cultural production and its connections with different traditions and sociocultural or political networks in the multicultural milieus where it emerged and circulated, especially in parts of the Greek world under Venetian and Ottoman rules, or in major centers of the Greek diaspora across Western Europe. Particular emphasis is placed on scholarly debates about issues of historical and cultural continuities and discontinuities; the transition from manuscript production and circulation to print networks; and the negotiation of ethnic and cultural ideologies and broader mentalities as articulated in representative, but not necessarily ‘canonical,’ works of the period.
