Religious Education and the Public Sphere reveals, through an analysis of theory and practice, that religious education is resting on historic and persistent assumptions about both religion and education. Drawing on work from Arendt and Weil, new ideas emerge regarding religious education's constituent elements: education and religion. It offers a new and timely proposal for religious education and argues for a broader understanding of religion, bringing a fresh contribution to current discussions regarding the relationship between religion and education in the public sphere. Some practical considerations emerging from theory developing through the earlier parts of the book are presented in the final section, including the teacher's role and what should guide religious education curriculum. At a time when there is raised interest in the role of religion in the public sphere internationally, this book aims to contribute something new, both theoretically and practically, to discussions regarding the role of religion in education is and relevant to educational contexts worldwide. This book will be vital reading for academics and researchers in the fields of religion and religious studies, education, philosophy of education and religious education, and will also be of great interest to teachers and policy makers working in the field of religious education in the public sphere.

Religious Education for Everyone argues for a public-democratic approach to religious education that gives access to what a religious way of life has to offer to all. Hannam and Biesta propose a new approach to religious education centred on a responsibility to introduce children and young people to what a religious way of being ‘in’ and ‘with’ the world may have to offer for them, individually and collectively. Their approach is an existential approach to religious education, one focussed on ways of leading one’s life, as opposed to more common confessional, anthropological, knowledge-focused or literacy approaches. They argue that since the religious way of life is an option open to everyone, education has the task to provide the new generation with opportunities to explore this option as an ‘existential possibility’ and an opportunity to discern its value in their life and for the world. The book opens a new dialogue on religious education in schools and on a societal level as something that can enable children and young people to share and develop their own thinking around issues including war, inequality and the climate crisis, as well as deepened understandings of the beauty of human life.

As diversity increases across the world, there is renewed interest in the place of religion in the public sphere. Is religion a private matter or of concern to everyone – even if they are not religious? What should religious education look like in the public sphere? Is religious education something for everyone, in all schools? What is educational about religious education? What is the justification for religious education? How do we make sense of religion itself, bearing in mind the wide variety of views and traditions? The chapters in Religion and Education: The Forgotten Dimensions of Religious Education? deal with these questions, focusing particularly on the two constituting elements of religious education: religion and education. Rather than discussing curriculum, pedagogy and assessment, the authors delve into more fundamental questions and concerns. Through this they provide a range of different responses to the question of whether religion and education may have become the ‘forgotten dimensions’ of contemporary religious education.Covering different educational views and traditions, and exploring a range of different religious ideas, traditions, and practices, whilst connecting this all to the challenge of religious education in the public sphere, this book seeks to make a contribution to the ongoing conversation about the importance of religious education for all.
