This text presents the findings of a major investigation of second language proficiency in various groups of school-aged learners. It invites a frank appraisal of the research from an outside panel of experts. The theoretical and practical implications of the study are the subject of a lively debate focused on three main research issues: the nature of second language proficiency, the impact of classroom treatment on second language learning, and the role of social and individual factors in bilingual development. This original collection of articles will be of interest to all those concerned with policy and practice in second language education.

The sixty-four columns in Margaret Mitchell: Reporter present a vivid portrait of a lively, far-ranging mind and an insightful observer well on the way to her full literary prowess long before the world even knew her name. More than a decade before Margaret Mitchell the novelist conceived the immortal fictive world of Gone With the Wind, Margaret Mitchell the reporter was pounding the real-life streets of her native Atlanta in search of the who, what, when, and where of her popular columns in the Atlanta Journal Sunday Magazine. Defying convention, the recent debutante took the early morning streetcar to the spittoon-filled, boisterous offices of her big city newspaper to ""hunt and peck"" on an old Underwood typewriter as one of the first woman columnists at the South's largest newspaper. From 1922 until 1926, Mitchell completed dozens of articles, interviews, sketches, and book reviews, only a handful of which have ever been reprinted. Included here are those pieces singled out by Mitchell as among her favorites, those of which she was most proud. The tendency to draw parallels between the personae of the real-life Mitchell and her most famous fictional heroine are irresistible. In this collection there are new and poignant insights into Mitchell's own sensibilities, passions, and opinions. Even as an objective reporter, the irrepressible personality of the observer shines through. Taken as a whole, this collection of Mitchell's journalism transcends the simple fact gathering of the reporter's trade to give a portrait of the artist as a young woman and a compelling snapshot at life in the Jazz Age South.

In his years of teacher workshops, author Patrick Allen has heard it all: 'I don't have time! 'I don't know what questions to ask! 'I don't know what to write in my notes, it's too hard! In his book Conferring: The Keystone of Reader's Workshop, Allen argues that the benefits of conferring outweigh the challenges and that teachers must put forth the effort of learning how to do it well. Inside, he shows teachers how to overcome their perceived obstacles and shows them how they can make conferring tangible.' Conferring lays the groundwork for effective reading instruction. Conferences with students are purposeful conversations that scaffold reading comprehension strategies to guide the reader's progress. Ultimately, through the gradual release of responsibility, you will create engaged and independent readers. Starting with what conferring isn't, Allen unpacks the essential components of the process: Intimacy: the social context of conferring Rigor: the cognitive context of conferring Inquiry: the analytical context of conferring' With his guidance, you will be able to set goals for student conferring and elevate student reader conferences from start to finish.

Bringing together some of the brightest and most-engaged thinkers in the UK, this book presents a raft of policy proposals capable of generating a new social settlement and a long-term, equitable economic recovery post-pandemic. It offers both a vision of a future Britain and a roadmap to getting there.Pushed by the Covid-19 crisis, the UK government has borrowed massively to save jobs, businesses and the economy from collapse, making a mockery of the austerity policies that it had championed for a decade. As a result the role of the state is now in sharp focus. The contributors assess what that role should be and how it should be harnessed for the good of the British people in all four of its nations. The call is for nothing short of a new settlement and a complete redesign of the economy. The contributors argue passionately and persuasively for a state that is properly funded, one that looks after its citizens regardless of age, class or ethnicity and enables them to live well. To do this requires the establishment of a functional, fair and green economy managed with a social and public purpose.
