If you are a student of medicine, nursing, health, and social care, then this revised edition is an invaluable learning resource for you.

Introduction to Health Psychology, 5th edition, is a must-read, widely praised textbook that provides the learning resources you need from theory and research to real-world examples, helping you develop a better understanding and critical thinking on the issues explored.

This revision provides a comprehensive guide on essential topics surrounding health, retaining its popular original structure of three multi-chaptered sections: 'Being and Staying Healthy', 'Becoming Ill', and 'Being Ill'. It also includes the useful final section, 'From Theory to Practice', which studies the need for theory-driven practice applications, making the most of the evidence available to support their study.

The edition offers you an insightful overview of a range of topics on health behaviour, from health-risk to health-protective habits, before exploring applications and healthcare intervention practices. It also discusses biological and psychobiological models and theories and the impact of stress on health, illness, and its progression, with extensive references to healthy diet and exercise.

The text also considers the role of key epidemiological updates and global health issues, cultural influences on health and health behaviour, and issues about health differentials, as seen in the illness experience.

Each chapter opens with a current real-world example and places the topic into context by introducing the outline and learning outcomes. Along with the increased use of case studies, its useful Glossary and a list of Further Readings, the content will offer food for individual reflection and group discussion, helping you fully engage with this applied area of psychology—an approach praised by lecturers and students alike!

* What is the role of psychology and psychological interventions in treating people with physical health problems?* Which factors contribute to the development of disease and its prevention?* How do people cope with and manage illness and how may these processes be influenced at both the individual and societal levels?* How can we highlight the comparative effectiveness of clinical interventions? This authoritative textbook is designed for use by final year undergraduates, those engaged in training for both clinical and health psychology, and practitioners. It is the first European text to combine elements of both clinical and health psychology in one volume. The book has five key themes: the causes of health and illness; psychological factors influencing the understandings of health, illness and health-related behaviour choice; the theory and application of psychological principles in facilitating individual behavioural and emotional change; the role of psychologists within the wider hospital system; and the role of psychology in population-based health promotion. Introduction to Clinical Health Psychology integrates psychological theory with the practice of health and clinical psychology in the hospital and in the broader context of health care. It considers both clinical interventions and those of a non-clinical nature that also impact on patients and health-care workers. In doing so, it addresses the developing curriculum for health psychologists' professional training as well as the more established role of clinical psychologists. It will provide essential reading in an increasingly significant and expanding field.

This innovative textbook adopts a lifespan approach to mental health. Paul Bennett provides an overview of factors that influence risk for mental health problems throughout the life course and emphasises lifelong models of mental health and disorders. In addition, he describes the nature and treatment of disorders specific to childhood, adulthood, and older adulthood.

Adopting a transdiagnostic approach, Clinical Psychology Through the Lifespan explores commonalities in the origins and processes associated with a range of disorders, as well as their unique features. Although the DSM 5 diagnostic criteria for each of the disorders are outlined in an appendix, a key emphasis of the book is its clinical psychology perspective. This is highlighted by text boxes within each chapter which focus on therapeutic case formulation and specific therapeutic process or challenges.

Written for undergraduate and Master's level psychology students studying mental health, it will be of interest to students from a range of other disciplines including nursing, medicine, and allied health.

Paul Bennett is a professor in the School of Psychology at the University of Swansea, UK. He previously taught psychology at Cardiff and Bristol Universities and worked as a clinical psychologist for the NHS.

In this superbly researched, accessible text, Paul Bennett delivers a novel and much sought-after approach to clinical psychology: lifespan perspective. Addressing the issues that contribute to psychopathology throughout the lifespan, he explores interventions that can be applied in each phase, before addressing the aetiology and treatment of key problems within each age range.

With a clear 3-part structure, the book explores the key factors that contribute to psychological disorders in each of three broad age groups; young people, adults, and older adults. It then covers a range of clinical approaches such as behavioural, CBT and humanistic models that are used in clinical practice. Clinical problems that are particularly relevant to each developmental stage, in particular how they present, their aetiology, and how they are treated from both psychological and pharmacological perspectives, are addressed in the final part of the book.

Each chapter includes the following features:

Chapter summaries - outline the chapter content to aid navigation through the bookLearning outcomes – highlight the key learning pointsClinical examples – bring clinical practice aliveCase histories – include family or individual accounts of the therapy process to illustrate practiceSynthesising and summary links – aid learning ''What do you think?'' boxes - invite the reader to consider a key issue in the chapter Research studies – introduce the latest research in the fieldClinical Psychology is a must have text for undergraduate students of clinical psychology, mental health nursing and those studying for their postgraduate and professional qualifications in Counselling and Clinical psychology. It will also be for mental health practitioners working in the NHS, including clinical psychologists and assistant psychologists.

Praise for the previous edition:

"This book provided an invaluable orientation to the grounding theoretical principles of clinical health psychology, how this knowledge can be applied by psychologists in healthcare settings, particular assessment and intervention approaches and issues associated with working with patients in healthcare settings ... I would highly recommend this as a key text for clinical psychology trainees and postgraduates working or researching in medical settings across the lifespan, both as a general orientation tool and a resource to refer to with reference to specific presenting issues.Fleur-Michelle Coiffait, Doctoral student, University of Edinburgh, UK

"The tone of this volume is well pitched; it is written in clear English yet without being over-simplified. New vocabulary is collated into ‘key terms’ boxes for easy reference at the end of the chapter – a useful device for the new student. Also proffered at chapter end are ‘For Discussion’ boxes, encouraging the reader to critically assess and compare the contents of the chapter, along with useful suggestions for further reading. With a good level of detail without swamping the reader, this volume is an excellent introduction to students of abnormal psychology."Hayley Burgess, Psychology Graduate

The ''Holy Grail'' of physics, is to obtain a “Theory of Everything”, from quarks to cosmology. This book is aimed at introducing the layman to some of the modern scientific ideas of high energy particle physics. It begins by giving a brief historical account and then introduces some of the key concepts that scientists have developed in order to get a unifying understanding of these laws. Most of the explanation is given in terms of coloured diagrams and simple descriptions, without recourse to the difficult mathematics that is inherent in this subject. The book gives an overview of some of the cutting edge areas of physics, with no previous knowledge assumed. Topics covered include gravity, electromagnetism, the strong and weak nuclear interactions, quantum theory and cosmology. It is just one of a series of books based on modern physics. Other titles include; Special Relativity: A concise guide for beginners General Relativity: A concise guide for beginnersQuantum Theory: A concise guide for beginners

Freddie, Bill and Irving are triplets. They are brought up by their Mum, Lillian, in a south-coast seaside town during the 1960s. An argument with a local girl called Marcia leads to retaliation which nearly destroys her home. Freddie, Bill and Irving are sent off to their aunts home on the west coast of Scotland for the rest of the summer, where it is hoped that they will remain out of trouble. However, the trio and trouble go hand in hand. The journey to Scotland is punctuated by one catastrophe after another, and the boys are soon being tracked down by several victims of their schemes.Nonetheless, the boys always manage to avoid the consequences of their actions and finally return home as heroes of the hour, almost oblivious to the trail of destruction that they have left in their wake.

Recent years have witnessed growing concern internationally in wellbeing and mental health across the legal community, a shift reflected in a host of initiatives, networks, reports and research studies. Changes to working patterns, generational shifts, and an increased interest in overall wellbeing have contributed to a growing movement towards better working practices - across all industries but particularly in high pressure professions such as law. The genesis of the lawyer wellbeing movement in the United States has spread to the UK, EU, Canada and Australia. In this opening chapter, Bree Buchanan, chair of the ABA Commission, covers the 2016 research regarding lawyer and law student impairment that served as the catalyst for creating the National Task Force on Lawyer Wellbeing. From this coalition of national organizations came the 2017 Report, which in turn launched a wide variety of national and state policy and practice innovations. Bree summarizes a snapshot of those developments.

This book is designed for all professionals working with people with heart problems. The book looks at the causes and consequences, basic counselling skills, stress management, risk factor intervention and how to develop rehabilitation programmes.

This book surveys recent advances in Conversational Information Retrieval (CIR), focusing on neural approaches that have been developed in the last few years. Progress in deep learning has brought tremendous improvements in natural language processing (NLP) and conversational AI, leading to a plethora of commercial conversational services that allow naturally spoken and typed interaction, increasing the need for more human-centric interactions in IR.The book contains nine chapters. Chapter 1 motivates the research of CIR by reviewing the studies on how people search and subsequently defines a CIR system and a reference architecture which is described in detail in the rest of the book. Chapter 2 provides a detailed discussion of techniques for evaluating a CIR system – a goal-oriented conversational AI system with a human in the loop. Then Chapters 3 to 7 describe the algorithms and methods for developing the main CIR modules (or sub-systems). In Chapter 3, conversational document search is discussed, which can be viewed as a sub-system of the CIR system. Chapter 4 is about algorithms and methods for query-focused multi-document summarization. Chapter 5 describes various neural models for conversational machine comprehension, which generate a direct answer to a user query based on retrieved query-relevant documents, while Chapter 6 details neural approaches to conversational question answering over knowledge bases, which is fundamental to the knowledge base search module of a CIR system. Chapter 7 elaborates various techniques and models that aim to equip a CIR system with the capability of proactively leading a human-machine conversation. Chapter 8 reviews a variety of commercial systems for CIR and related tasks. It first presents an overview of research platforms and toolkits which enable scientists and practitioners to build conversational experiences, and continues with historical highlights and recent trends in a range of application areas. Chapter 9eventually concludes the book with a brief discussion of research trends and areas for future work. The primary target audience of the book are the IR and NLP research communities. However, audiences with another background, such as machine learning or human-computer interaction, will also find it an accessible introduction to CIR.
