This book examines the medical significance of electrolytes, acids, bases and blood gases, and how they are determined. It was written to provide physicians with a snapshot of the analytical testing of electrolytes, acids, bases and blood gases. In addition, it provides laboratory technicians with an overview of physiology and pathophysiology in these fields. The first part of the book provides a summary of the current status of diagnosis and therapy. It can be used for quick reference at the - tient’s bedside or to more thoroughly research pathophysiological int- dependencies. A separate section is dedicated to electrolytes in urine. The latter chapters discuss the preanalytical and analytical testing of electrolytes, the acid-base balance and blood gases, with special cons- eration for performing determination using ion-selective electrodes and carrier-bound reagents (“dry chemistry”). The final chapter discusses the quality assurance of the methods, with consideration for the new Guidelines of the German Bundesärztekammer (2001), which are p- sented in outline form.

Auf diese Weise wird dem Kliniker ermöglicht, Einblick auch in die Analytik der Elektrolyte zu gewinnen. Die im Labor Tätigen erhalten einen Überblick über Physiologie und Pathologie des Elektrolythaushalts.Das Buch beschreibt im ersten Teil komprimiert den aktuellen Stand der Diagnose und Therapie von Störungen im Elektrolythaushalt und bietet dem Arzt sowohl eine rasche Orientierungshilfe am Krankenbett, als auch eine vertiefende Einsicht in pathophysiologische Zusammenhänge. Ein besonderer Abschnitt befaßt sich mit den Elektrolyten im Urin. In den anschließenden Kapiteln werden Präanalytik und Analytik der Elektrolyte unter besonderer Berücksichtigung der Bestimmung mittels ionenselektiver Elektroden sowie "enzymatischer" Methoden und trägergebundener Reagenzien ("Trockenchemie") einschließlich der Qualitätssicherung besprochen.

Iron is essential for most forms of life, including humans. On the other hand, iron is also potentially toxic. Therefore, the control of iron metabolism and maintenance of iron hemostasis is an crucial part of many aspects of human health and disease. Iron deficiency anemia is one of the most common diseases worldwide, but there are also anemias associated with chronic diseases, and other acquired or hereditary defects. Understanding the control of iron metabolism is furthermore important for understanding diseases of iron overload, like hemochromatosis. This booklet is designed for physicians, clinical lab personnel and medical students. It gives an overview about the principles of regulation of iron metabolism and erythropoiesis. In addition, the various disturbances of iron metabolism and the associated clinical findings are described. Special focus lies on the differential diagnosis of the disorders, and the approaches of therapy. Finally, a comprehensive schedule of tests is included available for the determination of iron metabolism-related parameters in serum/plasma and blood, with indication of methodologies applied and reference ranges.
