In the early seventeenth century, Virginia's Chesapeake region saw the emergence of a multiracial society centered around the profitable tobacco industry. While Native Americans, free and enslaved Africans, and Europeans coexisted and interacted, a hierarchical order formed with a small elite planting class, led by Governor William Berkeley, wielding power over land, labor, and governance. Seeking to form a coalition of dissatisfied elites and marginalized individuals, Nathaniel Bacon, a newcomer to the Virginia colony, led a rebellion against Berkeley and his supporters.In this game, students assume the roles of the elite loyalists to Governor Berkeley and the rebellious supporters of Nathaniel Bacon. Engaging in debates, conspiracies, and simulated acts of resistance, students will strive to shape the future governance of the Virginia colony, determining which group emerges as the ruling class and which group will be relegated to the lower rungs of colonial society.

Employing a frontier framework, this book traces intercultural relations in the lower Hudson River valley of early seventeenth-century New Netherland. It explores the interaction between the Dutch and the Munsee Indians and considers how they, and individuals within each group, interacted, focusing in particular on how the changing colonial landscape affected their cultural encounter and Munsee cultural development. At each stage of European colonization - first contact, trade, and settlement - the Munsees faced evolving and changing challenges.Understanding culture in terms of worldview and societal structures, this volume identifies ways in which Munsee society changed in an effort to adjust to the new intercultural relations and looks at the ways the Munsees maintained aspects of their own culture and resisted any imposition of Dutch societal structures and sovereignty over them. In addition, the book includes a suggestive afterword in which the author applies his frontier framework to Dutch-indigenous relations in the Cape colony.

If the frontier, in all its boundless possibility, was a central organizing metaphor for much of U.S. history, today it is arguably the border that best encapsulates the American experience, as xenophobia, economic inequality, and resurgent nationalism continue to fuel conditions of division and limitation. This boldly interdisciplinary volume explores the ways that historical and contemporary actors in the U.S. have crossed such borders—whether national, cultural, ethnic, racial, or conceptual. Together, these essays suggest new ways to understand borders while encouraging connection and exchange, even as social and political forces continue to try to draw lines around and between people.

Das vorliegende Buch "Technisches Zeichnen - Grundkurs" bietet eine schrittweise Einfüh­ rung in die Grundlagen und die Praxis des technischen Zeichnens. Es wendet sich an Ler­ nende in einer gewerblich-technischen Berufsausbildung, an angehende Techniker und sowie an Ingenieur-Studenten an Fachhochschulen und Technischen Hochschulen/Universitäten, die erstmals mit dem Problem des Lesens und Anfertigens von technischen Zeichnungen konfrontiert werden und sich schnell und fundiert in die Materie einarbeiten wollen. Das Buch vermittelt neben Fakten- auch Hintergrundwissen, um den Lernprozeß zu beschleuni­ gen und zu intensivieren. Aus diesem Grunde wurde auch das Kapitel über die Regeln und Verfahren der Darstellenden Geometrie aufgenommen, da sie die Grundlage vieler Regeln und Verfahren des technischen Zeichnens sind. Alle Lernschritte können zudem mit Hilfe der Übungsaufgaben (am Ende jedes Kapitels) und ihrer Lösungen (im Anhang) im Selbst­ studium kontrolliert und vertieft werden. Das Buch basiert auf einer Serie von Studienheften von Paul Otto sowie auf Vorlesungs­ manuskripten und Übungen von Christian Weber und Susanna Labisch, die sich in verschie­ denen Lehrveranstaltungen bisher schon bestens bewährt haben. Einerseits auf der Basis der mit diesen Unterlagen gemachten Erfahrungen und andererseits im Hinblick auf die gerade in jüngster Zeit stark veränderte (internationalisierte) Normung wurden aber erhebliche Überar­ beitungen, zum Teil auch Ergänzungen vorgenommen. In Kürze wird der auf der gleichen Basis aufbauende Folgeband "Technisches Zeichnen - Aufbaukurs" erscheinen, der sich im Stile einer einführenden Übersicht mit den wichtig­ sten Maschinenelementen und ihrer korrekten Darstellung in technischen Zeichnungen be­ schäftigenwird.
