This book gathers the outcomes of the second ECCOMAS CM3 Conference series on transport, which addressed the main challenges and opportunities that computation and big data represent for transport and mobility in the automotive, logistics, aeronautics and marine-maritime fields. Through a series of plenary lectures and mini-forums with lectures followed by question-and-answer sessions, the conference explored potential solutions and innovations to improve transport and mobility in surface and air applications.
The book seeks to answer the question of how computational research in transport can provide innovative solutions to Green Transportation challenges identified in the ambitious Horizon 2020 program. In particular, the respective papers present the state of the art in transport modeling, simulation and optimization in the fields of maritime, aeronautics, automotive and logistics research. In addition, the content includes two white papers on transport challenges andprospects.
Given its scope, the book will be of interest to students, researchers, engineers and practitioners whose work involves the implementation of Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) software for the optimal use of roads, including safety and security, traffic and travel data, surface and air traffic management, and freight logistics.

Many physical and engineering systems deal with micro-, meso-, macro-, and multi-scale phenomena. The accurate description and the reliable simulation of such phenomena entail major challenges from the point of view of both mathematical modelling and computational engineering. This book covers a selection of challenges related to "Mathematical and Computational Modelling Across the Scales”, stemming from the lecture notes of the XX edition of the Jacques-Louis Lions Spanish-French School in Numerical Simulations in Physics & Engineering. The thematic focus is broad, encompassing mathematical models of complex physical problems, theoretical results on their derivation, and development of numerical methods for their efficient simulation. The contributions of the book include: uncertainty quantification for phenomena at different scales such as epidemic dynamics, medical imaging, and geophysical exploration; structural health monitoring integrating small-scale sensor data in large-scale computational models; frontier numerical methods for the simulation of geophysical and heliophysical dynamics accounting for multi-scale, heterogeneous media; multi-physics, multi-scale models for the mechanobiology of atheroma plaques formation; locomotion models for swimming at the micro-scale; mathematical foundations of quantum mechanics phenomena at the micro-scale. The book is addressed to scientists and engineers, from both academia and industry, interested in the mathematical modelling and numerical simulation of a variety of complex systems in physics and engineering characterised by multiple scales.

This work provides an overview of a posteriori error assessment techniques for Finite Element (FE) based numerical models. These tools aim at estimating and controlling the discretization error in scientific computational models, being the basis for the numerical verification of the FE solutions. The text discusses the capabilities and limitations of classical methods to build error estimates which can be used to control the quality of numerical simulations and drive adaptive algorithms, with a focus on Computational Mechanics engineering applications. Fundamentals principles of residual methods, smoothing (recovery) methods, and constitutive relation error (duality based) methods are thus addressed along the manuscript. Attention is paid to recent advances and forthcoming research challenges on related topics. The book constitutes a useful guide for students, researchers, or engineers wishing to acquire insights into state-of-the-art techniques for numerical verification.

This volume addresses challenges and solutions in transport and mobility of people and goods with respect to environment, safety, security and socio–economics issues, exploring advanced computational research work and the latest innovations in transport.
This book brings together lectures presented at the ECCOMAS Thematic CM3 Conference on Transport held in Jyväskylä, Finland, 25-27 May 2015. It is divided into three parts, I: Reviews and Perspective, II: Computational Methods and Models and III: Translational Research. Each of these parts consists of contributions that present solutions to many transport challenges in this complex, rapidly changing subject.
The work contains the latest achievements of European research and technological developments needed for the next decade through computational results of scientific and technical experts who have made essential contributions in transport efficiency in Europe. The material presented here is the state of theart in Transport Modeling, Simulation and Optimization in the fields of Aeronautics, Automotive, Logistics, Maritime and Rails. Furthermore, this volume also answers the question how to apply Computational Research in Transport in order to provide innovative solutions to Green Transportation challenges of identified in the ambitious Horizon 2020 program.
This book is intended for students, researchers, engineers and practitioners that are computationally involved in the deployment of Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) in the areas of optimal use of road, traffic and travel data, traffic and freight management ITS services, road safety and security, sea traffic management, etc.
