Das Hauptaugenmerk dieser Untersuchung liegt auf der Bewertung zweier Diskussionen in Bezug auf den vegetarischen Diskurs in der Antike. Als Hauptquelle steht Porphyrios’ De Abstinentia im Vordergrund. Diese Schrift enthält nicht nur ein Plädoyer für die vegetarische Lebensweise, sondern auch eine wertvolle Sammlung von Meinungen verschiedener Philosophen, die sich gegen oder für den Vegetarismus geäußert haben. Zuerst wird das Fragment Gegen die Vegetarier des Klodios aus Neapel bzw. Herakleides Pontikos mit einer textkritischen Edition und Übersetzung präsentiert und diskutiert. Dann werden die intertextuellen Bezüge zwischen diesem und dem Fragment des Theophrast Über die Frömmigkeit analysiert. Zuletzt wird gezeigt, wie Porphyrios die Begriffe Oikeiosis und Philanthropia kritisch rezipiert, und darauf aufbauend eine räumliche Terminologie für seine eigene Ethik entwickelt hat. Anhand der Analyse dieser beiden Diskussionen will dieses Buch zeigen, dass die Diskussion um den Vegetarismus in der Antike vielfältiger und dynamischer war, als bis jetzt angenommen wurde.
