Artificial Intelligence in the International Film and Audiovisual Media Industries

This edited volume explores the transformative impact of Artificial Intelligence (AI) on the film and audiovisual media industries.Up to now, discussion of this topic has largely dwelled on a few discrete topics, such as the representations of AI in cinematic history or the generation of photorealistic images of de-aged or dead actors. The thrust of this book is to demonstrate how AI now plays a role in each and every stage of the value chain, from development and scriptwriting to editing workflows, post-production special effects, and audience engagement. Uniquely, this collection establishes a comprehensive understanding of AI's role with not only cutting-edge original academic research but also with practitioner interviews and industry insights from diverse global perspectives. Chapters closely examine case studies of how AI is influencing scriptwriting, storytelling, visual effects, music scoring, and how these tools are also changing film distribution, programming, marketing, and the viewer experience. Key overarching themes include how AI is both augmenting and constraining human creativity, the ethical and socio-cultural implications of AI across the film and media value chain, and the potential biases inherent in AI-generated content. This volume is an essential resource for researchers, students, practitioners, and policymakers, offering a nuanced perspective on the emergence and integration of AI in the audiovisual sector and its implications for the future of creative media production.

The first English-language book to cover Danish cinema from the 1890s to the present day, this wide-ranging collection places well-known auteurs such as Carl Th. Dreyer, Lars von Trier and Susanne Bier in their cultural context, and introduces a number of genres and themes that are less familiar to international audiences, including film stars of the silent era, children's film, folk comedies, porn film, trends in documentary and Greenlandic cinema. With twenty-two chapters, all of them specially commissioned for this volume, A History of Danish Cinema explores the role of screen representations and film policy in shaping Denmark's cultural identity, but also emphasises just how internationally mobile Danish films and filmmakers have always been showcasing this small nation's extraordinary contribution to world cinema.

The Nordic Research Network (NRN) began as a forum for UK- based early career researchers to share their work with peers in a convivial intellectual environment. As a multi-disciplinary gathering, the regular conference provides an opportunity for scholars in all areas of Nordic research to keep up with the diverse subjects and projects being pursued by colleagues across the country. The third conference was attended by researchers from a range of British institutions and took place at UCL over two days on the 5th and 6th of September 2013. Each year since its inauguration, the NRN conference has grown and evolved; this marks the first time the conference proceedings have been published. The conference has provided many new scholars with their first opportunity to introduce their research to the academic community. This book, similarly, gives a number of early career researchers a chance to see their work in print and reach a wider audience. The papers, organised into thematic chapters, reflect and showcase the diversity of subject areas, approaches, and methodologies of the Nordic Studies postgraduate research community. Together, they help illuminate larger questions of how cultural, social, and historical identities are mediated through literature, historical narratives, films, and architecture.
