This book is compiled of selected proceedings from the "Landscapes" Conference held at Turku University, Finland, in July 2005. The themes chosen for the conference – philosophy, ethics and sociological aspects, culture and education; social aspects; politics and regulation; economics and work; technology and emerging technologies – represent many of the perspectives from which to view this landscape. The papers illustrate the diverse impacts of the information society and the changing paradigms within education, law, health care, the workplace and on future societal infrastructures through research initiatives and the development of new technologies. In this book, IFIP WG9.2 has attempted to capture the new ‘emerging landscape’ of the Information Society.A picture of profound technological and social change emerges from this holistic approach. It offers a key to understanding the ramifications of computer technologies within the information society, and of the social accountability of all those who work with and are affected by them.

Jacques Berleur has of course been one of those few ICT experts who, since the 1970s, has tirelessly worked within the IFIP community to expose the nature of the ethical dilemmas of a society increasingly relying on the complex ICT infrastructures, to raise awareness of the social challenges this poses, and to influence action compatible with the ethical values of western democracy. And while Jacques, in the wake of his retirement from his university post is accelerating the pace of building his oeuvre, we can take the opportunity of this event to reflect on the critical stance towards the Information Society he has contributed to form within the TC9, which he chaired for many years.

What constitutes an identity, how do new technologies affect identity, how do we manage identities in a globally networked infonnation society? th th From the 6 to the 10 August 2007, IFIP (International Federation for Infonnation Processing) working groups 9. 2 (Social Accountability), 9. 6/11. 7 (IT rd Misuse and the Law) and 11. 6 (Identity Management) hold their 3 Intemational Summer School on "The Future of Identity in the Infonnation Society" in cooperation with the EU Network of Excellence FIDIS at Karlstad University. The Summer School addressed the theme of Identity Management in relation to current and future technologies in a variety of contexts. The aim of the IFIP summer schools has been to introduce participants to the social implications of Infonnation Technology through the process of infonned discussion. Following the holistic approach advocated by the involved IFIP working groups, a diverse group of participants ranging from young doctoral students to leading researchers in the field were encouraged to engage in discussion, dialogue and debate in an infonnal and supportive setting. The interdisciplinary, and intemational, emphasis of the Summer School allowed for a broader understanding of the issues in the technical and social spheres.
