Four short stories about people that have hired fancy dress outfits, and the unintended consequences that followed. All are unconnected to each other. THE DEVILBertie, who was in fact a morbidly overweight gay Vicar, thought it would be a source of Devilish fun to attend the party for the second time as the Devil himself. THE POLICEMANDave leaves it too late to hire the outfit he wanted, so is forced to wear the only one that is still on the shelf. Reluctantly he hires the Police Officer uniform with unexpected and potentially disastrous consequences. THE NUNSThree brothers who are in business together, plan a Christmas fancy dress party for the staff. They choose to attend as three nuns. All three of them are conned by a local man who is known to the locals as Mad Eric. He turns out not to be so mad after all as one by one they’re relieved of their money after buying worthless rubbish. The evening produces some unexpected surprises. THE ACTORRalph had always been a great fan of film and stage actors. He attends the above party and turns out to be a wolf in sheep’s clothing. When he confronts three youths who have taken photos of an intimate nature, they see another side of him. A side that they would never forget.

The argument that propels this emphatic book is that mental health nursing cannot continue to pin the blame for its own actions and failings on the psychiatric hierarchy. As the editors point out, mental health nursing is a degree-level qualification; it has achieved its ambition to be `a profession in its own right'. But it has failed to find its own voice and identity or to challenge the coercive, invalidating and traumatising culture and practices within the mainstream mental health services. It has failed above all to subject itself to its own critical scrutiny.This is what these chapters set out to do, starting powerfully with an apology from the editors to all the many millions of users of mental health services who have been subjected to the profession's failure to care: `We cannot think of a new knowledge, approach, skill or kind of empowerment that nurses have themselves forged as a "profession in our own right", of which our service users are identifiably beneficiaries,' they write.The editors and several of the 13 contributors to this book are members of the Critical Mental Health Nurses Network, formally launched in 2015.
