World Musics in Context is a wide-ranging survey of musics of the world, in their historical and social contexts, from ancient times to the present day. Ethnomusicologist Peter Fletcher begins by describing aspects of musical style and function in relation to the early developments of civilizations. He then goes on to explore, in five parts, music of the ancient world, music of Africa and Asia, European music, North and South American traditions, and music of the modern world. A compendium of information as well as an examination of musical causation and function, this book gives a deeper understanding of the various musical traditions that contribute to the modern, multicultural environment.

This book contains a wide-ranging survey of musics of the world, in historical and social contexts, from ancient times to the present day. It starts by describing aspects of musical style and function in relation to the early developments of civilisations, as background to a study of later transformations. It then describes, in some detail, musical traditions of Africa and Asia, in relation to history/geography and to other aspects of culture. European music is subsequently treated similarly, and in relation to music-cultures elsewhere. A further section examines the consequences of Europe's appropriation of the Americas, and describes popular musical styles in both Latin America and the USA. The final section considers the nature of tradition and change, examines some African and Asian musical styles in their colonial and post-colonial contexts, and considers, in broad historical perspective, the effects of Westernisation. A concluding essay examines the consequences for the West of global Westernisation, and of increasing cultural interchange. The book includes a Foreword by Laurence Picken, an essay that presents a unique view of music and ethnomusicology by one of the most distinguished scientists and musicologists of our time.In part a compendium of information currently available, in part a dialectical examination of musical causation and function, this book aims to lead students, teachers, and those who practise Western music towards a deeper understanding of the various musical traditions that contribute to the modern, multi-cultural environment. The author's aim throughout has been to achieve clarity in the writing and to make the book accessible to those with no training in ethnomusicology.

Since quasi-uniform spaces were defined in 1948, a diverse and widely dispersed literatureconcerning them has emerged. In Quasi-Uniform Spaces, the authors present a comprehensivestudy of these structures, together with the theory of quasi-proximities. In additionto new results unavailable elsewhere, the volume unites fundamental materialheretofore scattered throughout the literature.Quasi-Uniform Spaces shows by example that these structures provide a natural approachto the study of point-set topology. It is the only source for many results related to completeness, and a primary source for the study of both transitive and quasi-metric spaces.Included are H. Junnila's analogue of Tamano's theorem, J. Kofner's result showing thatevery GO space is transitive, and R. Fox's example of a non-quasi-metrizable r-space. Inaddition to numerous interesting problems mentioned throughout the text , 22 formalresearch problems are featured. The book nurtures a radically different viewpoint oftopology , leading to new insights into purely topological problems.Since every topological space admits a quasi-uniformity, the study of quasi-uniformspaces can be seen as no less general than the study of topological spaces. For such study,Quasi-Uniform Spaces is a necessary, self-contained reference for both researchers andgraduate students of general topology . Information is made particularly accessible withthe inclusion of an extensive index and bibliography .

This book collects and organizes work in quasi-uniformities and quasi-proximities in order to encourage the use of the structures in general topology. It discusses a radically different viewpoint of topology, leading to new insights into purely topological problems.

Once you've got a web site up and running it is all too easy to sit back and relax. But how do you know you did a good job? How can you improve the site you have based on real user behaviour? Without getting feedback from your users, how will you find out how it's being used? Web traffic analysis allows you to gain some insight into your site users: where they come from, what pages they like, and how often they come back. However, as statistics are prone to being misinterpreted, your insight often has to be taken with a pinch of salt. This book takes you through the process of analyzing your traffic, without taking for granted the statistics that you generate. Assuming you have a web site, reading this book will help you learn: - The techniques for gathering data on your users - Standards and Guidelines you should adhere to when interpreting your data - What other sites are doing to ensure they respect the privacy of their users - Insight into how real sites use web traffic analysis - Major case case studies from BBC News Online, eBay, and ASPToday - Additional material from The Onion, SmartGirl, and The New York Times From the Publisher This book is for any web professional who wants to understand their site traffic. It's also for anyone with an interest in finding out where their site is most used, and how to make comparisons with other sites. To get the most from this book, you'll need access to log files for your web site as they contain the information we'll show you how to analyze. The book discusses the privacy practices of The Onion, SmartGirl, and The New York Times, as well as examining in detail the traffic analysis techniques used by BBC News Online, eBay, and ASPToday.
