Highly recommended as a clear, scholarly, and balanced presentation that helps the reader grasp both the significance of the Scrolls and their value as background material for our understanding of the Bible.” —Library Journal“Although there are numerous books about the Dead Sea Scrolls, few are as comprehensive, well designed, and easy to read as this one. Add to all this the authority that VanderKam brings to the text (he has long been involved with scrolls research), and you have the one book you want on the topic, if you can only have one book.” —Booklist

This volume contains a collection of compositions from Cave 4 at Qumran, written during the Second Temple period and linked to biblical texts through characters, themes, or genre. Some of these, such as the Levi Aramaic Document, Testament of Naphtali, and Prayer of Nabonidus, were known previously from Greek and Aramaic manuscripts of the Apocrypha. The additional documents include PseudoDaniel, the Commentaries on Genesis, Commentary on Malachi, Apocryphon of Joshua, The Two Ways, Apocryphon of Elisha, Prayer of Mercy, and a number of small miscellaneous texts. All these documents greatly enhance our understanding of the phenomenon of psuedepigraphy (written in the name of a famous biblical or religious character) and of biblical interpretation during the Second Temple period.

Unlike the documents from Qumran itself, these have the advantage of being found in a well-recorded archaeological context. There is an archaeological introduction. The sites are (listed from north to south): A. Ketef Jericho (archaeological missions of 1986 and 1993, part of 'Operation Scroll'); B.
