This volume contains the proceedings of the IFIPTM 2008, the Joint iTrust and PST Conferences on Privacy, Trust Management and Security, held in Trondheim, Norway from June 18 to June 20, 2008. IFIPTM 2008 provides a truly global platform for the reporting of research, development, policy and practice in the interdependent areas of Privacy, Security, and Trust. Following the traditions inherited from the highly successful iTrust and PST conference series, IFIPTM 2008 focuses on trust, privacy and security from multidisciplinary perspectives. The conference is an arena for discussion about re levant problems from both research and practice in the areas of academia, busi ness, and government. IFIPTM 2008 is an open IFIP conference, which only accepts contributed pa pers, so all papers in these proceedings have passed strict peer review. The pro gram of the conference features both theoretical research papers and reports of real world case studies. IFIPTM 2008 received 62 submissions. The program commit tee selected 22 papers for presentation and inclusion in the proceedings. In addi tion, the program and the proceedings include 3 demo descriptions. The highlights of IFIPTM 2008 include invited talks and tutorials by industri al and academic experts in the fields of trust management, privacy and security, including Jon Bing and Michael Steiner.

The theory of value is probably the most disputed feature of Marx’ political economy, while mostly another problem – namely the issue of transformation – is addressed. Two particular reasons for this contestation are the following: (1) it stands at the centre of marking the political of political economy, and (2) it is cross-cutting with respect to the micro- and macro-level and especially the ‘personal/individual’ and the ‘societal/institutional’ aspects of economic thinking. In addition, some illusionary reasoning, suggesting that we are all better off than we had been 10, 50 or 100 years ago, remains more in the vein of a ‘Yes, we can’ supposition, not arriving in reality. Furthermore, the questionable character comes even more to the fore as we witness again the existence of a group of plutocrats (Freeland, 2012), a class of superrich whose affluence is beyond reason and even imagination. However, at the core stands an obviously far-reaching change of the mode of production. Notwithstanding the critique then and now, there are good reasons to emphasise the usefulness of the theory of value. These will be taken up by exploring explicitly the tensions mentioned and discussing them against the background of the contemporary shift within the capitalist mode of production. Marxism, in this light, is instrumental for the analysis of globalisation as it allows a clearer understanding not least of the emergence of poverty chains and the role of the capitalist state as an institution that maintains centre-periphery patterns of inequality within the productive sphere. Furthermore, we can find here at least clues for answers Marxism has when it comes to fighting for societal change, not least changes and challenges that are linked to the emerging processes around digitisation.

Developing the before presented methodological framework further, is a self-referential and self-reflexive process. This simply means that detailing and weighing criteria can only emerge from already applying the historical analysis, by this enabling the author to develop the foundation further theoretical and then more detailed historical analysis. Thus, SPA can be localized dialectically as part of the process of socialization. To conceptualized socialization and the models of socialization - and aiming by this on developing a framework for the analysis of SPA - has to start, however, by analyzing the reality on which the theoretical thinking is grounded, which it mirrors. To truly understand the different contractualist ideas we first have to understand the conditions and their development from where and as part of which they emerge and into which they provide an input, actively influencing contemporary developments.

This volume constitutes the proceedings of the 3rd International Conference on Trust Management, held in Paris, France, during 23–26 May 2005. The conf- ence follows successful International Conferences in Crete in 2003 and Oxford in 2004. All conferences were organized by iTrust, which is a working group funded as a thematic network by the Future and Emerging Technologies (FET) unit of the Information Society Technologies (IST) program of the European Union. The purpose of the iTrust working group is to provide a forum for cro- disciplinary investigation of the applications of trust as a means of increasing security, building con?dence and facilitating collaboration in dynamic open s- tems. The notion of trust has been studied independently by di?erent academic disciplines, which has helped us to identify and understand di?erent aspects of trust. Theaimofthisconferencewastoprovideacommonforum,bringingtogether researchers from di?erent academic branches, such as the technology-oriented disciplines, law, social sciences and philosophy, in order to develop a deeper and more fundamental understanding of the issues and challenges in the area of trust management in dynamic open systems. The response to this conference was excellent; from the 71 papers submitted to the conference, we selected 21 full papers and 4 short papers for presentation. While it is frequently suggested that Human Rights are universal and indivisible, it is an undeniable fact that this is far from being true. And if there was ever any justification for talking about an ending to history, that narrative has definitely lost all justification in the light of recent developments. In fact, we are now witnessing a new harsh round of global system competition, often at the edge of a global hot war, now not anymore in a bipolar world but in a multipolar setting.The book contributions include reflections on history and theory, the reinterpretation of rights in different national contexts and/or in relation to specific groups (e.g. women) and areas (e.g. digitization).The book is meant to be a food for thought, at the end arguing in favour of the need to redefine Human Rights, reflecting the changes since the inauguration of the UDHR.

Instead of following this path, the present work analyses these developments as extreme consequence that emerged from the individualist and short-sighted understanding of rationality that coined the enlightenment and had been translated into an institutionalist take on democracy. Such view, while accepting the common interpretation of a dramatic and extremely dangerous development, goes further: it emphasises the need to question the pathway of modernisation: Looking at what is hidden by the eclipse of reason encourages also to look for a new societal model, asking for a real public, transcending current strives for publicity. As such, it is an important contribution to debates on precarity and a one-sided understanding of Human Rights. Scholars of political science and political philosophy will be interested in the work as it will be of interest for those who are engaging in oingoi8ng political debates.
