This book focuses on education in small states. It examines the strengths and weaknesses of different aspects of educational provision in political jurisdictions having a very small population – populations which encounter specific challenges, threats and opportunities. This book presents a balance in regional representation – covering the South Pacific, the Caribbean, Africa, Europe and the Mediterranean. The contributions pay particular attention to basic education, higher education, entrepreneurship training, post-primary education and the impact of globalization on educational restructuring and aid delivery in specific small state regions. Based in a holistic exposition and appraisal of Gramsci’s writings that are of relevance to education in neoliberal times, this book--rather than simply applying Gramsci's theories to issues in education--argues that education constitutes the leitmotif of his entire oeuvre and lies at the heart of his conceptualization of the ancient Greek term hegemony that was used by other political theorists before him. Starting from this understanding, the book goes on to compare Gramsci's theories with those of later thinkers in the development of a critical pedagogy that can confront neoliberalism in all its forms.

Education, Individualization and Neoliberalism questions the individualization process in education in the Anglo-American context and analyses how this process is applied in the everyday life of millennials with tertiary education in Southern Europe. Valerie Visanich explores the close affinity of this concept to neoliberalism in contemporary societies, specifically by focusing on changes in education and employment. Using Beck & Beck-Gernsheim's concept of individualization to refer to increased freedom in one’s life choices yet at the same time increased risks, Visanich unpacks the trajectories of life experiences of tertiary educated millennials in the contemporary neoliberal Anglo-American setting in relation to recent cultural and socio-economic changes. She examines how this individualized mode is adopted and adapted in countries across Southern Europe including Italy, Spain, Portugal, Malta and Greece – in locations where cultural conditions habitually cushion-out, often by family networks and patronage, some of the burdens of being young today.

To stop the downward spiral of intensifying environmental violence that inevitably leads to social violence we, as humans, need to better understand what is at stake and to determine how to make changes at the root levels. Ecopedagogy is centered on understanding the struggles of and connections between human acts of environmental and social violence. Greg W. Misiaszek argues that ecopedagogies grounded in critical, Freirean pedagogies construct learning that leads to human actions geared towards increased social and environmental justice and planetary sustainability. Throughout the book he discusses the need for teaching, reading, and researching through problematizing the causes of socio-environmental violence, including oppressive processes of globalization and constructs of “development”, “economics”, and “citizenship”, to name a few, that emerge from socio-historical oppressions (e.g., colonialization, racism, patriarchy, neoliberalism, xenophobia, epistemicide) and dominance over the rest of nature. Misiaszek concludes with ecopedagogies’ challenges within the current post-truth era and possibilities of reimagining UNESCO’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Over more than a century of failed education policy, Indigenous peoples have yet to witness a comprehensive Indigenous education program that fundamentally honors the federal trust responsibility of the United States government. This book proposes a distinctly Indigenous framework that demands the expansion of the curricular canon and invites and empowers the Indigenous voice as a powerful entity capable of bridging epistemological divides toward true emancipation within education and learning community contexts. This book considers three distinct areas of scholarship, literacy education in the first two years of schooling, First Nations perspectives, and critical literacy as a teaching approach and way of being. Helen Cozmescu presents a synthesized understanding of critical literacy, which draws on the work of Paulo Freire, Lorenzo Milani and contemporary scholar Hilary Janks. It merges understandings of critical literacy with data from two studies carried out in Australia, a school-based study which focused on teaching and learning practices and a large-scale study about teacher professional development. Results from these studies exemplify young students’ abilities and enthusiasm to engage with substantive topics including the role of teachers’ knowledge and positionality on First Nations perspectives; critical literacy as an imperative for education; and the need to prioritize First Nations content. The book shows how issues of power, racism, and equality can be tackled through the cultivation of critical literacy and includes discussion of work by children's authors including Isaiah Firebrace, Amy McQuire, David Millar and Coral Vass.

This open access book examines the dominance of safety discourses in education and its connection with neoliberalism.Over the past few decades, the term ‘safety’ has become silently but increasingly pervasive in educational debates worldwide. This book problematises this pervasiveness and analyses both its historical origins and practical implications.The first part of the book investigates how ‘safety’ became a problem of educational concern in the Anglophone world and its link with the development of neoliberalism. The second part is based on an ethnographic study, funded by the Spencer Foundation, which explores the safety practices of four secondary schools in Aotearoa New Zealand, a country at the vanguard of ‘Third way’ educational policies. The findings show that while safety discourses provide an avenue for discontent teachers and students to channel their aspirations of social justice, efforts to create safe learning environments often contribute to the depoliticization/psychologization of social issues and the reinforcement of neoliberal logics of mental optimisation and choice. The book concludes with a call to move away from safety discourses and a tentative way forward that builds upon the contradictions of these discourses.The ebook editions of this book are available open access under a CC BY-NC-ND 4.0 license on bloomsburycollections.com. This book develops a new theory and practice of Freirean art literacy based on decolonial principles. It investigates the implementation of Freire’s ideas in the context of middle school visual arts education based on the author's research and experience of teaching in Italy and Europe and drawing on art works and theory from Brazil, Chile and Africa. Vismara offers an auto-ethnographic analysis of personal experiences of art teaching, educational tools, workshops, and strategies. She proposes an innovative and decolonial approach to school planning that starts from the students’ words and world. Artists’ words, youth street culture, imagination, and the iconography of mass images are presented throughout the book as examples of how educators can use visual art to develop the process of Freirean conscientization with their students. This book rediscovers and reinvents Freire’s ideas, applying his critical and political approach to visual arts literacy in new theoretical and practical ways.
