Das Diabolische war der englischen Literatur stets ein größeres Problem als der Anglistik; so ist die Forschung kaum über Einzelbetrachtungen und bruchstückhafte Motivgeschichten hinausgekommen. Die vorliegende Studie unternimmt hingegen eine diachrone Schau vom 16. bis zum Ende des 20. Jahrhunderts aus funktionsgeschichtlicher Perspektive: Welche Funktionen und Wirkungen hatte das Teuflische innerhalb und außerhalb von Texten? Wem nutzten solche Wirkungen? So richtet sich das Augenmerk auf einschlägig bekannte Werke wie die morality plays, Marlowes »Doctor Faustus«, Miltons »Paradise Lost«, Blakes Epen, Shaws frühe Dramen, Conrads »Heart of Darkness« und Rushdies »Satanic Verses«, aber auch auf Texte von Greene, Nashe, Jonson, Shelley, Byron, Rider Haggard, Buchan, Cameron, Auden und Golding. Dazu treten im 20. Jahrhundert Texte, die literarische Strategien explizit satanistisch funktionalisieren, Crowleys und LaVeys Gegenbibeln ebenso wie die lyrics ›satanischer‹ Rockmusik. Es zeigt sich, daß anspruchsvollere Erklärungsmodelle als die Topoi vom Niedergang des Diabolischen seit der Renaissance und von der Wiederkehr des Teufels notwendig sind, um die komplexen Bewegungen von Entdämonisierung und Verteufelung in der Literatur Englands der letzten 500 Jahre zu verstehen. Diesen Verschachtelungen steht dabei ein Rezeptionsphänomen gegenüber, das historische Konstanz besitzt: die Verteufelung des Autors, der vom Teufel geschrieben hat.
