Die Arbeit stellt das Entstehen von Geschichtsbildern dar, deren Funktion für die Entwicklung eines spezifischen historischen Selbstverständnisses untersucht wird. Besonders interessiert die Bewertung der Zeit, die heute als ''Mittelalter'' bezeichnet wird. Gegenstand der Untersuchung ist die stadtgeschichtliche Überlieferung Regensburgs in der frühen Neuzeit. Die Benennung und Zuordnung der zahlreichen ungedruckten Manuskripte ergab, daß im wesentlichen zwei um 1600 entstandene chronikalische Werke bis etwa zum Jahr 1790 immer wieder kopiert, verändert und erweitert wurden. Sie repräsentieren die konkurrierende protestantisch-reichsstädtische bzw. katholisch-bayerische Sichtweise auf die Stadtgeschichte. Die Jahrhunderte zwischen dem Ende der römischen Herrschaft und der Reformation bilden den Schwerpunkt in der jeweiligen Darstellung der Chronisten, mit deutlicher Hervorhebung der Zeit des Hochmittelalters. Auch in Regensburg war das ''Mittelalter'' also keine ''Entdeckung'' des 19. Jahrhunderts. Die Überlieferungsgeschichte der Texte zeigt, daß beide historischen Traditionen gerade auch durch die Beschreibung der Architektur und des Denkmalsinventars der Stadt um 1600 die Realitätswahrnehmung ihrer Träger und Rezipienten über fast zwei Jahrhunderte hinweg prägten.
