Besides global problems on terrorism, global warming and wars all around the world, there is one major topic in our news: it's the EU with its internal problems from financing Greece to internal stability. The last mentioned point will be subject of that paper, because Britain is deeply divided about the proposed referendum on United Kingdom's Membership in the European Union, respectively its opportunities and risks. During the last election in the UK, Prime Minister David Cameron took the referendum into the manifesto of his Conservative Party because of the annual debates about costs and benefits from the EU and after winning the election he now has to stand up for it. The back then started campaign Let Britain decide will now reveal, whether or not the Brits want to stay or not. t is not unreasonable to think about Britain leaving the EU as, for example, Anthony Forster lists the historically settled problems between Europe and Great Britain in his book-summary like it is inevitable for the UK to leave. And talking about the legality of that referendum is therefore not an option, because Article 50 TEU (Treaties of the European Union) settles the possibility of a voluntary resignation (cf. Streinz et al. 2008: 38-39). The main part of the seminar paper is going to start, after introducing the topic in the initiation, with an analytically and descriptively chapter of analysing the pros and cons of leaving the EU. The first section of the main part is therefore divided in two parts, the opportunities and the risks. In the course of doing this, the perspective is clearly aligned to the UK itself, so that one should be able to decide, whether or not it will be good for the British people to vote yes or no and which decision they should take. Possible consequences for the EU are completely hidden, because it doesn t matter for the Brits, who take part in this referendum. In addition to that there will be an analytic part of discussing the meaning of the mentioned opportunities and risks as section two of the main part. Subsequently, in an overview chapter, the advantages and disadvantages are going to be compared to each other to be able to qualify both of them. The final conclusion will take place in Chapter 5, in which the paper will be finished with an outlook and an analysis which option to take.

Seminar paper from the year 2017 in the subject Cultural Studies - Miscellaneous, grade: 2,0, University of Wurzburg (Neophilologisches Institut - Moderne Fremdsprachen), course: A Matter of Class - Ken Loach and the Condition of Britain, language: English, abstract: Ken Loach's episode of the omnibus project "e;9'11'01 - September 11"e; describes the event of the terror attack of New York when thousands of people lost their lives. Because of that and the fact that film is "e;the most powerful and realistic of the arts"e;, this paper wants to critically analyse it, regarding the reception theory, because "e;media messages are always open and 'polysemic'"e; and are interpreted according to the context and the culture of receivers"e;. Due to the Audience Response Theory (ART), "e;[a film] is encoded according to the meaning structure of the mass media production organization and its main supports, but decoded according to the different meaning structures and frameworks of knowledge of different situated audiences"e;. This is being widened by Metz, who points out the similarity of the theory and cultural signs: "e;The fact that must be understood is that films are understood"e;. He states that a film includes cultural signs which are transmitted by a significate and a signifier. The created meaning, however, is received by viewers. This gives the paper not just the purpose of researching but of critically analysing the director's way of presenting, as well. Henceforward, his way of depicting is considered being inappropriate, which is the thesis of this paper and needs to be proven throughout. For this paper, the ART has been chosen because of an ongoing debate, whether one can examine the meaning and effect of a film by looking at its genre: This debate is part of a wider concern running right through media and cultural studies that genre analysis tends to limit the ways in which the meanings of texts can be explored . This is due to because without an audience no text or maker of that text would exist . On the other hand, one should examine genre as well, according to Bernard Dick: As movie audiences grow increasingly diverse, there is little likelihood that there will ever be an all-embracing theory of film reception only more studies, both sociological and psychological, on spectator response . So, in one word, reception studies eliminates [sic!] the need to examine production since meaning is produced by the reader . Staiger continues and contradicts that this very position is dangerous, because that interference only inverts fallacious binary oppositions: producer/consumer, author/reader . Because of that, we are going to inspect both the structure and reception of the film to underline the thesis declaring it inappropriate.

This very title indicates a major concern about language. The author is thinking about Canada which is stereotypically said to be the politest countries in the world. Or, like the novelist Bissoondath put it in: "e;We are a country of good heart, a country on the whole of courage and goodwill [...]"e; (2006: 25). Souvaliotis continues and analyzes that Canadians voice their "e;concerns so gently packaged and tightly buried in their talk that most listeners would naturally smile"e; (2011). Scientifically, this prejudice seems to be incredible, which is why this paper needs to be written. The title and research question, hence, can be stated as Canadian Politeness A never-ending stereotype or just the truth about the friendliest country? and should outline whether Canadians are more polite than others and if so, why. The hypothesis states in fact a more kindly and friendly way of speaking, though, it just occurs in a sense of habit and not manner.

With this quote, Davidson introduces the broad topic of the paper: inheritance, money, love, society - and what goes along with it. Whether it is Downton Abbey or Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice, the "e;financial status and the operations of inheritance play a fundamental role"e;, which is "e;never speaking openly, but always present"e;. But, to intervene right at the beginning of this funny looking idea of a paper about English literature, one could state the question of money and Jane Austen - How Pride and Prejudice generates an access to contemplating marriage socioeconomically as absolutely vital, as "e;economic interpretations of literature often reveal the power base of the society on which the novel is built as well as the author's own view about the appropriateness of that power base"e;. In other words, and to define the very problem of the novel: Mr. Bennet [ ] is unable to use his property to provide for his family after his death since one of the stipulations included in most legal entailments was that, if there were no son to inherit the property, it would descend to the eldest nephew or male cousin in the next generation of the family , which leads Buttner to summarize the entire novel and say that it is basically all about sex and money. The paper, hence, should analyse this problem in form of a vivisection of social restraints, in which possession seems to control love and in order to investigate about Austen s ability to discriminate against social habits and practices of her time. This is, to legitimize the choice of the text, exactly the point, why one should have a close look at Jane Austen. She is not just a very famous female writer in English literature, but one of the most knowns for criticising society and structures. The specific topic however, is derived from the heart of analyses, contemplating the details of characters, plots, settings, and so on, while rather few scholars seem to concentrate on the meaning a novel can convey for understanding the time and circumstances it comes from. Most of them focus on the author and want to compare the author s real life with the novel. This is, in kind, not of big use, because one simply can answer the question if the novel was written according to the author s life.

Seminar paper from the year 2018 in the subject American Studies - Literature, grade: 1,7, University of Wurzburg (Neuphilologisches Institut), course: Science Fiction and Social Activism, language: English, abstract: This paper investigates if Octavia Butler's Kindred is fitting into the overall definition of science fiction and, if not, why and how she is exaggerating the genre and its limits. There are different approaches available to analyze this content. For example, one could work with a historical analysis of a genre, presented in Cuddon/ Preston. On the other hand, no investigation on history could prevent the paper from losing itself in trivialities of change. For this reason, I will choose a mixed approach, analyzing standard works, dictionaries, companions, and specialist books on different branches of the genre, to be able to summarize all parameters needed to form a profound definition. On the one hand, the paper will therefore work quantitatively in sense of finding as much evidence as possible for each and every parameter. On the other hand, I am going to work qualitatively in sense of investigating one special example (Kindred) regarding the overall contemplation. Although the paper could never reach representativeness, the selection of possible classifications and definitions is highly important, as they shape the paper s outcome and final conclusion. For this reason, writers from both sides of the ocean shall be taken into consideration, as they influenced the genre in a wide extent, for example in creating the progression of the New Wave and, therefore, might be important for the paper, too. Assuming that, the paper is going to deal with the genre itself, not authors in particular. A distinct theory is not needed, as the structure is set up to be a theoretical one, analyzing the content of a genre and hence works on theoretical constructs itself. Nevertheless, postmodernism will be of a great importance, which will be both introduced and explained in the following chapters. The paper will be organized in an introduction, presenting the topic, research question, and thesis. Next to that is chapter two, containing definitions, in which parameters from research are being listed to be able to set a definition. Chapter three changes to social criticism in SF and explores, why Kindred is social criticism in the first place, and investigates, if it fits into the definition found in chapter two. Part four will merge the two lines of action and set a new and overall definition. It will answer the research question, if and how Octavia Butler s Kindred is exaggerating the definition and verifies or falsifies the thesis.
