Synthesizing a vast body of empirical research and organizing it around a comprehensive conceptual model, this book is recognized as the definitive reference on adult attachment. The authors explain how what began as a theory of child development is now used to conceptualize and study nearly all aspects of social functioning across the lifespan, including mental representations of self and others, emotion regulation, personal goals and strivings, couple relationships, caregiving, sexuality, psychopathology, psychotherapy, and organizational behavior. The origins and measurement of individual differences in adult attachment are examined, as is the question of whether and how attachment patterns can change.New to This Edition:*Reflects major advances, including hundreds of new studies.*Clarifies and extends the authors' influential model of attachment-system functioning.*Cutting-edge content on genetics and on the neural and hormonal substrates of attachment.*Increased attention to the interplay among attachment and other behavioral systems, such as caregiving and sexuality.*Expanded discussion of attachment processes in counseling and psychotherapy.*Additional coverage of leadership, group dynamics, and religion.

In this thought-provoking addition to the Herzliya Series on Personality and Social Psychology, editors Phillip R. Shaver and Mario Mikulincer have gathered a varied group of international thinkers to investigate existential concerns within a framework that is both philosophical and practical.Theorists examine the nature of universal themes such as the importance of personal choice and human autonomy in an arbitrary world, and the vital roles of parenthood and religion in providing solace against the threat of meaninglessness. And clinicians discuss the use of various cognitive behavioral therapies, emphasizing the mind amp rsquo s propensity to assign value in ways that can be either maladaptive or liberating. The authors build upon insights from previous chapters, resulting in a cohesive book filled with cutting-edge research.

This book is an interdisciplinary exploration of how social connections are expressed at the neurological, developmental, dyadic, and group levels.Social connections contribute to our vitality and sense of meaning and-at times-to our anguish. The mechanisms underlying human connections have long fascinated researchers in the social sciences and, more recently, in neuroscience. Yet there is too little dialogue among these scientists and too little integration of findings. This book aims to rectify that situation by surveying cutting-edge theory and research on social connections. Chapters explore the formation of social connections at four levels of expression: neurological, developmental, dyadic, and group.

This four-volume handbook summarizes the current state of knowledge on major topics within the fields of personality and social psychology. Coverage is contemporary, is provocative, and sets an agenda for future work in the area. Volume focuses on attitudes and social cognition, describing the two main directions in which this domain has moved over the past quarter century. First, there is increasing focus on the phenomenology of daily life, with emphasis on the contents and drivers of mundane daily life. These include emotional experience, religious beliefs, feelings of control and agency, the function of conscious thought, and how all of these underpin our sense of self and important social behaviors. The second trend has been toward a deeper understanding of basic human nature, with increasing focus on unconscious or implicit cognitive processes that influence virtually all facets of daily life (e.g., how power transforms how we think about others and what qualities we associate with leadership). Volumes 2 and 3 provide a broad framework to guide theorizing and research with respect to group processes and interpersonal relations in social psychology. Topics of discussion include theory and research on prejudice, stereotyping, and discrimination intergroup and intragroup processes and the formation, maintenance, and dissolution of relationships. Together, the chapters reflect a wide range of theoretical perspectives at different levels of analysis, including perspectives from disciplines outside of psychology (e.g., biology, neuroscience, health sciences, sociology). Volume 4 contains sections on personality processes and individual differences as well as sections on more holistic approaches, such as The Person in Context and The Person as a Whole. Authors provide not only the foundational material on their topic but also discuss the big issues or bones of contention and what they see as the ways forward to resolve these issues.

In this compelling book, prominent investigators Mario Mikulincer and Phillip R. Shaver review the state of the science of attachment-based interventions in psychotherapy and beyond. They critically evaluate a range of programs that aim to strengthen parent–child, couple, and therapist–client relationships. The theoretical and empirical underpinnings of each intervention are examined, as are specific techniques used to enhance felt security and foster personal growth. The book also looks at evidence-based interventions outside the mental health domain, including programs that target teacher–student relationships and academic performance. Looking to the future, the authors discuss emerging applications of attachment theory in medicine and health care, management and organizational behavior, and group and intergroup processes. See also the related work from Mikulincer and Shaver, Attachment Theory Expanded: Security Dynamics in Individuals, Dyads, Groups, and Societies.

From pioneering attachment researchers, this book takes an expansive look at the nature and functions of security dynamics in personal and social relationships. Mario Mikulincer and Phillip R. Shaver examine how attachment operates not only in close dyadic relationships (parent–child, romantic partners), but also between teachers and students, therapists and clients, physicians and patients, leaders and followers, and within organizations. Also considered is the nature of "attachments" to objects; commercial brands; substances, such as foods and drugs; and places. The book highlights ways to integrate attachment theory with other influential social and psychological theories concerning factors that enable individuals, groups, and societies to flourish despite inevitable threats, conflicts, and losses. Measures of Personality and Social Psychological Attitudes: Volume 1 in Measures of Social Psychological Attitudes Series provides a comprehensive guide to the most promising and useful measures of important social science concepts. This book is divided into 12 chapters and begins with a description of the Measures of Personality and Social Psychological Attitudes Project''s background and the major criteria for scale construction. The subsequent chapters review measures of "response set"; the scales dealing with the most general affective states, including life satisfaction and happiness; and the measured of self-esteem. These topics are followed by discussions of measures of social anxiety, which is conceived a major inhibitor of social interaction, as well as the negative states of depression and loneliness. Other chapters examine the separate dimensions of alienation, the predictive value of interpersonal trust and attitudes in studies of occupational choice and racial attitude change, and the attitude scales related to locus of control. The final chapters look into the measures related to authoritarianism, androgyny, and values. This book is of great value to social and political scientists, psychologists, nurses, social workers, non-academic professionals, and students.
