Key issues in applied and fundamental research related to Fuzzy Logic and Intelligent Technologies in the nuclear industry and related fields were addressed by the above workshop. The papers in this volume were carefully selected from a large number of contributions, and cover applications in radiation protection, nuclear safety (human factors and reliability), safeguards, nuclear power plant control, decision making and nuclear reactor control. The papers are categorised into three groups, namely mathematics (basic tools for the treatment of fuzzy logic), engineering (knowledge-based engineering, expert systems, etc.) and nuclear science.

Following FLINS '94, the 1st International workshop on fuzzy logic and intelligent technologies in nuclear science, FLINS '96 aimed to introduce the principles of intelligent systems and soft computing, such as fuzzy logic, neural networks, genetic algorithms (and any combination of these three), knowledge-based expert systems and complex problem-solving techniques, in nuclear science and industry and in related fields.This volume presents carefully selected papers drawn from more than 20 countries. It covers theoretical aspects of intelligent systems and soft computing, together with their applications in nuclear science and industry.

This symposium provided a forum for interchange of state-of-the-art techniques and databases and for standardization of radiation metrology.The proceedings are of value to anyone involved in reactor dosimetry, including researchers, manufacturers, and representatives from industry, utilities and regulatory agencies. The major topics treated are: reactor pressure vessel surveillance and plant life management; reactor dosimetry techniques; benchmarks; nuclear data; damage correlation and exposure parameters; experimental and calculational characterization of irradiation environments; dosimetry for research reactors and irradiation experiments.

Following FLINS '94 and FLINS '96, the first and second International Workshops on Fuzzy Logic and Intelligent Technologies in Nuclear Science, FLINS '98 covers recent developments, both of a foundational and applicational character, in the fields of intelligent techniques such as fuzzy logic, neural networks, genetic algorithms, robotics, man-machine interface and decision-support systems within nuclear science and related research fields.This volume clearly shows the leading role of FLINS as a forum for the applications of new intelligent techniques in the nuclear domain.

This book constitutes the proceedings of the fourth meeting in a series of topical conferences dealing with the process of nuclear fission, mainly at low excitation energy. Two chapters deal with the characteristics of one of the major fission observables, i.e. the fission fragments. The book also gives due attention to an often-neglected aspect of fission, the so-called ternary fission (i.e. fission accompanied by a charged light particle). Another chapter deals with fission barriers and cross sections and the link with astrophysics. Special attention is also given to recent applications such as accelerator-driven systems and transmutation. The last chapter discusses various interesting aspects of nuclear fission.

This book is divided into three parts. The first part, “Mathematical Tools and New Developments”, provides basic tools to treat fuzzy set theory, rough set theory, fuzzy control, fuzzy modelling, decision support systems, and related applications. The second part, “Intelligent Engineering Applications”, reports on engineering problems such as man-machine interface, risk analysis, image processing, robotics, knowledge-based engineering, expert systems, process control integration, diagnosis, measurements and interpretation by intelligent techniques and soft computing used for general engineering applications. The third part, “Nuclear Engineering Applications”, concentrates on nuclear applications and covers several topics such as nuclear energy, nuclear safety assessment, radioactive waste management, nuclear measurements, nuclear safeguards, nuclear reactor operation, reactor controller design, fuel reload pattern design, signal validation, nuclear power plants, and optimizations in nuclear applications.

FLINS is an acronym for Fuzzy Logic and Intelligent Technologies in Nuclear Science. FLINS 2002 is the fifth in a series of FLINS conferences and covers state-of-the-art research and development in computational intelligence for applied research in general and for nuclear science and engineering in particular. This book outlines the trends in computational intelligence in control, decision-making, and nuclear engineering, and presents the latest developments of computational intelligent systems in applied research and nuclear applications.

This book presents the state of the art in reactor dosimetry as applied to nuclear power plants and to high performance research reactors, accelerator-driven systems and spallation sources. The reader will also find the latest advances in computer code development for radiation transport and shielding. In addition, the book focuses on radiation measurement techniques.

During these meetings, actual topics are discussed by a group of experts. This book gives the state of the art in the field of reactor dosimetry as applied in nuclear power plants and research reactors.
