Google is typically thought of as a tech giant and the world’s largest search engine, but it was also among the first tech companies to invest in news. After 9/11, the company recognized the economic and social value of up-to-the-minute information and began to incorporate news into its business. Google News—built on automation, algorithms, aggregation, and the unbundling and rebundling of news—and Google’s other news-related initiatives went on to play a major role in shaping the information ecosystem of the twenty-first century. In The Tech-Media Hybrid, Qun Wang examines Google’s engagement with news across more than two decades, tracing the company’s complicated relationship with the news industry. She shows how Google developed a push-and-pull relationship with the media sector, boosting its visibility while also competing against it and establishing new norms. What the company calls the “Google way” of experiencing news has exerted a profound influence on traditional media; Google’s news ambitions, in turn, have been shaped by the global news industry’s actions and reactions at every step. Shedding new light on the vast transformations of the past quarter century, this multimethod interdisciplinary book also offers insight into how the news environment might evolve in the era of AI.

Over the next ten years integrated distributed intelligent systems (IDIS) techniques will be widely used in modern manufacturing and will quicken the development and applications of distributed artificial intelligence (AI). This book describes the concept, methodology, architecture, construction and implementation techniques of IDIS as well as their applications in real-world manufacturing. Its contents spans some high technology areas, including advanced manufacturing technology, advanced process control, AI in engineering applications, advanced industrial automation and distributed AI. In essence, the book presents the state-of-the-art technology in manufacturing systems and the newest development in distributed AI. Applications in both discrete and continuous manufacturing are featured in the text. This text should be useful for teaching graduate and senior undergraduate students, in advanced manufacturing systems and distributed AI courses. It should also assist professorial research staff in tracing the most recent technology in distributed AI, and can be used as a self-instruction tutoring book for retraining engineers in manufacturing and process industries.

In recent years there has been tremendous progress in the area of tissue engineering research. This book focusses on the fundamental principles underpinning these recent advances in the materials science developed for tissue engineering purposes. Smart materials for tissue engineering are produced by modifying the physicochemical and biological properties of the scaffolds with response to external stimuli to enhance the tissue regeneration. The functions of living cells can be regulated by smart materials which respond to changes in the surrounding microenvironment. This book comprehensively documents the recent advancements in smart materials for tissue engineering and will provide an essential text for those working in materials science and materials engineering, in academia and industry.

In the last couple of decades, research in the area of tissue engineering has witnessed tremendous progress. The focus has been on replacing or facilitating the regeneration of damaged or diseased cell, tissue or organs by applying a biomaterial support system, and a combination of cells and bioactive molecules. In addition new smart materials have been developed which provide opportunities to fabricate, characterize and utilize materials systematically to control cell behaviours and tissue formation by biomimetic topography that closely replicate the natural extracellular matrix. Following on from Smart Materials for Tissue Engineering: Fundamental Principles, this book comprehensively covers the different uses of smart materials in tissues engineering, providing a valuable resource for biochemists, materials scientists and biomedical engineers working in industry and academia.

This book analyzes the patterns of and factors associated with health seeking behavior and out-of-pocket (OOP) spending on chronic non-communicable diseases (CNCDs) in rural Malawi. The author used descriptive statistics to describe treatment options and related household OOP expenditure on CNCDs and econometrics models to analyze factors influencing health seeking behavior and OOP expenditure on CNCDs. This study found that in spite of a context where care for CNCDs should in principle be free of charge at the point of use, the utilization rates of CNCD care are still low and OOP payments impose a considerable financial burden on rural households, especially among the poorest.

This book highlights the discussions by renown researchers on questions emerged during transition from the relativistic heavy-ion collider (RHIC) to the future electron ion collider (EIC). Multiple heavy-ion accelerator complexes are under construction: NICA at JINR (4 ~ 11 GeV), FAIR at GSI (2 ~ 4.9 GeV SIS100), HIAF at IMP (2 ~ 4 GeV).
