Instrumentation holds a central position in engineering training, thanks to the continued advance of sensor technology and industry's demand for increasing sophistication in measurement and control systems. More than ever students of instrumentation needs to understand the practical problems which affect the implemetation of sensing and measuring devices -knowledge of the instruments themselves is no guarantee that they can be successfully installed in any given system. This book shows how instruments can be put to optimun use in a variety of environments. The topics covered include general transduction techniques and sensing of various measurands, detailed analysis of calibration and feedback. Two case studies discuss some current practices in the food and nuclear power industries. This book should be of interest to second and third year electrical engineering students taking courses in instrumentation.

This book of problems with worked solutions, aims to provide practice in problem solving for students on undergraduate and Higher National Diploma programmes in electronics. It may used as an independent text, or as a companion text to "Electronics" by Crecraft, Gorham and Sparkes (Chapman and Hall, 1993). The problems are designed to provide practice in the skills acquired in the programme of study; integrate knowledge gained from the study of a number of separate topics; reinforce knowledge by applying theory to problems of analysis and synthesis. Readers of "Electronics" who have answered the self-assessment questions in that book should find that these problems provide a sound and comprehensive reinforcement of understanding. The solutions to the problems are fully worked and contain, where necessary, an explanation of why the approach taken or the method used is the most appropriate. Explanatory notes are also included where necessary.
