The chapters in this book provide detailed analyses of a range of issues that feed into an overview of the strategic development of the MNE over the past 40 years. This modeled as the evolution of the MNE from a multidomestic hierarchy to a network hierarchy to the contemporary strategic diversity of the heterarchy. The extensive range of empirical and conceptual analysis covers the strategic roles and competitive evolution of subsidiaries; the positioning of R&D labs of MNEs; how MNEs'' R&D and product development programmes relate to, and affect the performance of, countries'' national systems of innovation; the ways in which dispersed subsidiaries and labs now work to support both the effective use of current competitive technologies and the generation of new sources of competitiveness for global firms. An underlying theme of the book, that is also developed conceptually, is how the global operations of MNEs involve selective involvement with national economies and the implications of this for globalization and economic development.

Though it''s widely understood that inward foreign direct investment has played a major role in mediating China''s emergence into the international economic system, how and why MNEs have implemented their involvement as part of their global strategy is less well understood. This book explores the nature of the MNE in this era of globalization.

The book uses interview and survey information from 300 of the world''s leading industrial enterprises to provide an in-depth investigation of the issues relating to the internationalisation of R & D by multinational enterprises. The viewpoints of central coordinating R & D units and their overseas subsidiaries are analysed. The issues covered include the nature and funding of the work done in overseas facilities; the specialisation of roles in globalised R & D; coordination practices; sources of ideas implemented in R & D programmes and attitudes to government policies.

This book refocuses thinking on how multinational enterprises (MNEs) can achieve a sustained contribution to European transition economies as these countries move from the processes of transformation into pursuit of more sustained development. The authors apply key aspects of recent work on the strategic aims and nature of the contemporary MNE to the transition economy context, and find that the generation and application of technology has particular relevance to the success of MNEs in Central and Eastern Europe. The book is based on the results of two new wide-ranging surveys and includes a thorough review of current literature.

The pressing of sheet metal into useful shapes is a technology which requires an understanding of a wide range of subjects. This text is divided into three sections: processes, materials and tests. In Part 1, sheet metal forming is examined mainly from a mechanical engineering viewpoint; firstly plasticity and anisotropy, then process variables - friction, lubrication and temperature - and finally practical aspects of forming in the press-shop. Part 2 deals with the main sheet alloys at varying lengths, depending on their industrial popularity. Certain research results, showing the fallibility of the phenomenological approach, are also highlighted. A section of testing procedures concludes the volume.
