The E M B 0 course on "Formal Analysis of Genetic Regulation" A course entitled "Formal analysis of Genetic Regulation" was held at the University of Brussels from 6 to 16 September 1977 under the auspices of EMBO (European Molecular Biology Organization). As indicated by the title of the book (but not explicitly enough by the title of the course), the main emphasis was put on a dynamic analysis of systems using logical methods, that is, methods in which functions and variables take only a limited number of values - typically two. In this respect, this course was complementary to an EMBO course using continuous methods which was held some months later in Israel by Prof. Segel. People from four very different laboratories took an active part in teaching our course in Brussels : Drs Anne LEUSSLER and Philippe VAN HAM, from the Laboratory of Prof. Jean FLORINE (Laboratoire des Systemes logiques et numeriques, Faculte des Sciences appliquees, Universite Libre de Bruxelles). Dr Stuart KAUFFMAN (Dept. of Biochemistry and Biophysics, School of Medicine, Philadelphia). Prof. Gregoire NICOLlS (Service de Biophysique Theorique, Faculte des Sciences, Universite Libre de Bruxelles) and his temporary coworker Dr David RIGNEY (presently at the Center for Statistical Mechanics and Thermodynamics of the University of Texas at Austin, Texas).

Within the realm of quantitative geography, systems modelling is specifically concerned with understanding those relationships that influence the attributes of phenomena located in space and time. The intention is to replicate the main processes influencing a system's behaviour and, thereby, assist its manage ment through a capability to estimate future change. Over the last few decades, one of the major institutional initiatives for promoting such research has been provided by specialised Study Groups and Commissions established by the International Geographical Union (IGU). These scholarly networks have aimed to co-ordinate international research agendas for geographical systems model ling and their activities have been recorded in both edited volumes (Fischer and Getis, 1997) and special issues of learned journals (Wilkinson and Boots, 2000; Leung and Okabe, 2001). Presently, this facilitative task is the charge of the Commission on Modelling Geographical Systems (CMGS) appointedat the IGU Hague Congress in 1996 and chaired by Barry Boots (1996-2000) and Richard Thomas (2000-present). Set against this background, this book provides a perspective on the work of the CMGS from 1996 until the IGU Seoul Congress in August 2000 through a collection of papers first presented to our sessions at this event. Moreover, a number of Japanese delegates were attracted to this Asian venue and their con tributions provide many new ideas concerning the implementation of systems analysis.

The International Joint Commission (IJC) was established between Canada and the United States under the Boundary Water Agreement in 1909. The Great Lakes Water Quality Agreement between the two countries (signed in 1972, revised and renewed in 1978) expresses the determination of each country to restore and en hance the water quality of the largest freshwater system in the world. The Agreement provides for two inter national boards to assist the IJC: the Great Lakes Water Quality Board and the Great Lakes Science Advisory Board. In 1982, the Dredging Subcommittee of the Great Lakes Water Quality Board was asked to investigate and provide an assessment of the environmental impacts of sediment-bound contaminants and to recom mend alternate strategies for solving ecological problems associated with the presence and removal of pollu tants. This issue however, was beyond the scope of the Dredging Subcommittee. It was then referred to the Great Lakes Science Advisory Board with a specific request that the Board focus on whether contaminated sediments located in areas with water quality problems and impaired uses should be removed and if so, under what conditions. The Science Advisory Board established a Task Force to address these issues with specific reference to: - provide the IJC with an assessment of the effects of sediment-bound contaminants on biota and water quality; - recommend appropriate remedies for possible application by the parties for remedial activities in the Great Lakes; and - identify gaps in knowledge and suggest appropriate investigations to provide this knowledge.
