This conference proceedings brings together the work of researchers and practising engineers concerned with computational modelling of complex concrete, reinforced concrete and prestressed concrete structures in engineering practice. The subjects considered include computational mechanics of concrete and other cementitious materials, including masonry. Advanced discretisation methods and microstructural aspects within multi-field and multi-scale settings are discussed, as well as modelling formulations and constitutive modelling frameworks and novel experimental programmes. The conference also considered the need for reliable, high-quality analysis and design of concrete structures in regard to safety-critical structures, with a view to adopting these in codes of practice or recommendations. The book is of special interest to researchers in computational mechanics, and industry experts in complex nonlinear simulations of concrete structures.

Built upon the two original books by Mike Crisfield and their own lecture notes, renowned scientist René de Borst and his team offer a thoroughly updated yet condensed edition that retains and builds upon the excellent reputation and appeal amongst students and engineers alike for which Crisfield's first edition is acclaimed.Together with numerous additions and updates, the new authors have retained the core content of the original publication, while bringing an improved focus on new developments and ideas. This edition offers the latest insights in non-linear finite element technology, including non-linear solution strategies, computational plasticity, damage mechanics, time-dependent effects, hyperelasticity and large-strain elasto-plasticity.The authors' integrated and consistent style and unrivalled engineering approach assures this book's unique position within the computational mechanics literature.Key features: Combines the two previous volumes into one heavily revised text with obsolete material removed, an improved layout and updated references and notationsExtensive new material on more recent developments in computational mechanicsEasily readable, engineering oriented, with no more details in the main text than necessary to understand the concepts.Pseudo-code throughout makes the link between theory and algorithms, and the actual implementation.Accompanied by a website (www.wiley.com/go/deborst) with a Python code, based on the pseudo-code within the book and suitable for solving small-size problems.Non-linear Finite Element Analysis of Solids and Structures, 2nd Edition is an essential reference for practising engineers and researchers that can also be used as a text for undergraduate and graduate students within computational mechanics.

Modern, powerful computational methods, combined with major improvements in experimental techniques, have resulted in significant advances in the study of material instabilities. This book presents the latest research in the field of material instabilities in solid materials (soils, concrete, rocks, ceramics, metals, polymers and composites) and associated phenomena, such as strain localisation, fracture and failure in general. Collected within this volume are the cutting edge contributions from the prestigious IUTAM Symposium of 1997. A broad spectrum of materials is covered, with the emphasis on common aspects of failure, and a full range of experimental, analytical and numerical methods are addressed. In addition, the state-of-the-art, and recent advances covered in the book are summarised in the introductory chapter. No other treatise is available which is so up to date and compiled by such a broad spectrum of leading researchers. This book will find a wide appeal amongst practising engineers, researchers and students in civil, mechanical and aerospace engineering, and researchers and students in materials science.

The EURO-C conference series (Split 1984, Zell am See 1990, Innsbruck 1994, Badgastein 1998, St Johann im Pongau 2003, Mayrhofen 2006, Schladming 2010, St Anton am Alberg 2014) brings together researchers and practising engineers concerned with theoretical, algorithmic and validation aspects associated with computational simulations of concrete and concrete structures. The conference reviews and discusses research advancements and the applicability and robustness of methods and models for reliable analysis of complex concrete, reinforced concrete and pre-stressed concrete structures in engineering practice. Conference topics and invited papers cover both computational mechanics and computational modelling aspects of the analysis and design of concrete and concrete structures:* Constitutive and Multiscale Modelling of Concrete* Advances in Computational Modelling* Time Dependent and Multiphysics Problems* Performance of Concrete Structures The book is of special interest to researchers in computational concrete mechanics, as well as industry experts in complex nonlinear simulations of concrete structures.

This book presents the latest achievements in the field of composite materials modelling presented by the following authors: (1) Prof. H. Altenbach (Germany), (2) Prof. R. de Borst (The Netherlands), (3) prof. E. Craciun (Romania), (4) Prof. R. Pyrz (Denmark), (5) Prof. T.Sadowski (Poland). The text gives a modern, up-to-date account of recent developments in the modelling of composite materials. Multiscale concepts, which are the new paradigm in (computational) mechanics, are at the heart of this text, and are treated in detail in the first three chapters of the book. Other relevant developments are covered in the later chapters of the book, beginning with the most relevant issue of coupling stress analysis and diffusion phenomena that arise from hygral and/or thermal loading, which are of crucial importance of the short and long-term resistance of composite materials. The volume facilitates understanding of the basic principles of damage growth and fracture processes in various composite materials, including ceramics, polymers, metal-matrix composites and porous materials.

Composite materials are heterogeneous by nature, and are intended to be, since only the combination of different constituent materials can give them the desired combination of low weight, stiffness and strength. At present, the knowledge has advanced to a level that materials can be tailored to exhibit certain, required properties. At the same time, the fact that these materials are composed of various, sometimes very different constituents, make their mechanical behaviour complex. This observation holds with respect to the deformation behaviour, but especially with respect to the failure behaviour, where complicated and unconventional failure modes have been observed. It is a challenge to develop predictive methods that can capture this complex mechanical behaviour, either using analytical tools, or using numerical me- ods, the ?nite element method being the most widespread among the latter. In this respect, developments have gone fast over the past decade. Indeed, we have seen a paradigm shift in computational approaches to (composite) ma- rial behaviour. Where only a decade ago it was still customary to carry out analyses of deformation and failure at a macroscopic level of observation only – one may call this a phenomenological approach – nowadays this approach is being progressively replaced by multiscale methods. In such methods it is r- ognized a priori that the overall behaviour is highly dependent on local details and ?aws.

This work gives a modern, up-to-date account of recent developments in computational multiscale mechanics. Both upscaling and concurrent computing methodologies will be addressed for a range of application areas in computational solid and fluid mechanics: Scale transitions in materials, turbulence in fluid-structure interaction problems, multiscale/multilevel optimization, multiscale poromechanics.A Dutch-German research group that consists of qualified and well-known researchers in the field has worked for six years on the topic of computational multiscale mechanics. This text provides a unique opportunity to consolidate and disseminate the knowledge gained in this project. The addition of chapters written by experts outside this working group provides a broad and multifaceted view of this rapidly evolving field.
