'The Concrete Elegance' lecture series celebrates the inspirational and innovative uses of concrete. 'Concrete Elegance One' - the first in a series of three books - documents some of the projects which form the backbone of these talks. The book highlights two particular projects, which express a renewed interest in concrete's plastic and aesthetic qualities that are present in architecture today, namely One Centaur Street and Aberdeen Lane. Both of these projects demonstrate how ready mixed concrete and the right selection of formwork and placement techniques can produce award winning architecture at affordable prices. 'Concrete Elegance One' will renew an interest in the potential of concrete in all its many forms and expressions and inspire architects, designers and engineers to use concrete in more innovative ways.

This publication, the third in the 'Concrete Elegance' series, explores the various colours and surface consistencies of concrete. It discusses the quality and variety of colour emerging in concrete architecture using examples, such as the black concrete of the Utrecht Library, the grass-imprinted precast panels of the A16 Toll Booths in France, the pink glass reinforced concrete (GRC) panels of Villaverde in Madrid and the plain grey concrete in the Bacon Street House. The book shows that the interpretation and end results of using tried and tested concrete mixes and commonly used forming materials still offer almost limitless design freedom and scope for expression. The landscape, hardscape, parkland and playground projects and domestic artefacts reviewed in this edition help to broaden the readers understanding of concrete's potential and universal appeal.'The Concrete Elegance' series is based upon a set of lectures which showcased innovative and creative concrete architecture. Many exciting and diverse projects and products were presented by architects and designers at the lectures and this provided the inspiration for the popular series of books.

The British, we are often told, are a cautious bunch, wary of the new and conservative in their tastes. Yet, British Architecture in the 21st Century has an almost unrivalled reputation around the world for daring, innovation, creativity and flair. From Beijing to New York and Doha to Mumbai, British architects and British expertise are playing a major role in redefining the world’s cities and creating great buildings with the names of Rogers, Foster, Grimshaw, Farrell, Hopkins and many others featuring prominently on the global stage. So, where has this come from? How did British Architecture grab the world’s attention?Using the RIBA’s unique collections and material drawn from key architectural practices, this book explores the story of British architecture abroad between the years 1750 to the present day. Inspired by the BBC television series, it looks at early buildings and far off places, explores what and where the British built, and sets in context the dramatic transformation in the post war years of an industry that had once been resistant to modernism. Examining the work of a definitive generation of architects - Norman Foster, Richard Rogers, Nicholas Grimshaw, Terry Farrell, Michael Hopkins - and other key players, this book charts the projects and influences that put British architecture back on the world map.

In October 1910 the Royal Institute of British Architects hosted the first ever international conference on Town Planning. The Transactions of this critical event in the development of planning as a profession and as a discipline were published a year later in 1911. Long out of print and very difficult to obtain, this new facsimile edition of the Transactions of the 1910 Conference now makes available – for planners and historians alike – this valuable primary resource.

Presents the extra measures needed for property protection and business resilience beyond those in the 'Building Regulations Approved Document B, Volume 2'. This guide includes RISCAuthority's 'Insurer Requirements for the Implementation of Fire Safety Engineering Solutions'.The threat of fire is a major concern to construction clients, architects and other construction professionals. Protecting property as well as people from fire is a key business objective and designing in appropriate measures can considerably reduce the cost of implementation. The extra measures needed for property protection and business resilience beyond those in the "Building Regulations Approved Document B, Volume 2" are clearly and logically set out in this guide. Essentially reproducing the official Approved Document in full but enhanced by comprehensive annotations by RISCAuthority (formerly InFiReS), the guide provides the design community with a single point of reference in a familiar format. This invaluable guidance is further supported by the inclusion of RISCAuthority's 'Insurer Requirements for the Implementation of Fire Safety Engineering Solutions', which considers the property protection dimension of engineered fire safety designs.

The new 2010 version of "Approved Document G" (sanitation, hot water safety and water efficiency) will be available in paper format in Spring 2010. The revised Part G features enhanced hot water safety and efficiency measures for all new homes, with inbuilt protection from hot water scalding in baths using protective devices to limit hot water temperature, and the introduction of a new maximum standard of 125 litres of water per person per day. The main proposed amendments to the Building Regulations are: the requirement that baths in new homes are fitted with protective measures, such as a thermostatic mixing valve, to limit the temperature of the hot water; a water efficiency standard of 125 litres per person per day for new homes; extending existing safety measures to all types of hot water systems (not just vented systems); and, setting out where greywater and harvested rainwater can be safely used.
