This book seeks to deepen the reader’s understanding of the complex ethical and social disputes that corporations and managers face in an increasingly globalized world. It reviews the history and nature of global capitalism along with the role of the multinational within the global economy. Special attention is paid to emerging and frontier markets where there is economic potential but also major challenges due to institutional voids.Globalization is a constantly evolving field. In addition to exploring basic economic concepts and ethical frameworks, this second edition takes into account many new developments across different industries, ranging from "Big Tech" to "Big Pharma." It reviews some of the controversies that have affected those industries including bribery, censorship, the politics of computer networking, sweatshops, divestment, and the intensifying crisis of climate change. The book now includes short case studies to help spur creative reflection. Also, the revised content is highlighted in two new chapters – "Bribery and Corruption" and "Emerging and Frontier Markets."The book is ideal for use as a textbook on globalization, and specifically for courses that want to introduce a social responsibility or ethical component at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels.

Pope John Paul II was the second longest serving pope in history and the longest serving pope of the last century. His presence was influential not only to Catholics, but also throughout the world. The Encyclicals of John Paul II is the first book to focus in depth on the pope’s fourteen encyclicals, through which he communicated many of the key themes of his papacy. The first part of the book includes helpful background information—a brief biographical sketch of John Paul II’s life, his intellectual formation, and central theological themes of his papacy, including some of the major controversies of the 20th century. The first section of the book also provides invaluable background on the nature of an encyclical, including the history of this papal document. The second part of the book provides a thorough commentary on these encyclicals. The encyclicals are grouped by theme, introduced individually, and analyzed to trace broad themes through John Paul II’s work and theology. The Encyclicals of John Paul II provides an important discussion of these key documents from John Paul II’s papacy.

This visionary book presents an interdisciplinary and cogent approach to the issue of Internet governance and control. By examining five critical areas in which the tension between freedom and control is most palpable—fair competition and open access, free expression, intellectual property, privacy rights, and security—Spinello guides the reader on a tour of the emerging body of law and public policy that has attempted to control the anarchy of cyberspace. In so doing, he defends the credo of Internet self-regulation, asserting that the same powerful and flexible architectures that created the Internet as we know it today can be relied upon to aid the private sector in arriving at a workable, decentralized regulatory regime. Except in certain circumstances that require government involvement, self-regulation is not only viable but is a highly preferred alternative to the forced uniformity that centralized structures tend to impose.Beginning with an exploration of the Internet's most important values, including universality, free expression, and open access, as well as its promise as a democratizing force, Spinello considers how we can most effectively preserve those values and fulfill that promise while curtailing the social harms that vex Internet users. How do we arrive at the right mixture of technology and policy so that the Internet does not lose its promise as a liberating technology? In examining this question, Spinello evaluates such architectures of control as filters and rights management protocols, which attempt to keep out unwanted information and protect intellectual property, respectively. He explores how these and other technologies can be designed and used responsibly so that online social order can be sustained with a minimal amount of government intervention.

Richard A. Spinello and Maria Bottis defend the thesis that intellectual property rights are justified on non-economic grounds. The rationale for this moral justification is primarily inspired by the theory of John Locke. In the process of defending Locke, the authors confront the deconstructionist critique of intellectual property rights and remove the major barriers interfering with a proper understanding of authorial entitlement. The book also familiarizes the reader with the rich historical and legal tradition behind intellectual property protection.
