This varied and impressive volume is a record of the major presentations at the NATO Advanced Research Workshop on the "Development of Sex Differences and Similarities in Behavior" held at Chateau de Bonas, Gers, France, July 14-18, 1992. Although aspects of sex differences in human and animal behavior have been recently extensively explored both academically and in popularized accounts, the present work shows that the complex interplay between the various biological, political, psychological and sociological factors that account for sex differences has always been, and will continue to be, a source of infinite fascination and confusion to humans. The book contains presentations by a powerful mixture of eminent scientists from the relevant biological and social sciences areas, any ethnocentric tendencies being tempered by the wide mix of nationalities. Current information is placed in an evolutionary and genetic context and includes material from anatomical, endocrinological and behavioral studies of animal behavior and from the human cognitive sciences.The Development of Sex Differences and Similarities in Behavior is accessible to a spectrum of readers, from university undergraduates to experienced professionals.

The Neural Control of Behavior contains some of the material presented and discussed at the first interdisciplinary conference on the neural control of behavior, held at the Department of Psychobiology of the University of California, Irvine in June 1968. The compendium presents papers prepared by scientists from a variety of disciplines, which touched upon the primary concerns of psychobiology. Main topics covered include neural mechanisms, evoked responses and network dynamics, perceptual mechanisms, and behavioral and cellular responses to novel and repeated stimuli. Hypothalamic mechanisms for motivational and species-typical behavior, learning and memory, and the behavior of hippocampal neurons during conditioning experiments are also discussed. Psychologists, neurologists, and psychobiologists will find the book very insightful.

It is fitting that a meeting evaluating masculine and feminine 'characteristics' was located in the Gascony region immortalised in Alexandre Dumas epic, macho tale of The Three Musketeers. It is even more satisfying that Marc HAUG the French Director (a D' Artagnan equivalent) was ably assisted by a US/French Consortium of three co-Directors (Drs. Richard E. WHALEN, Claude ARON and Kathie L. OLSEN). The ARW also provided opportunities to explore the region around the Chateau, to appreciate the complex history of the area and to sample armagnac and other local gastronomic creations. A lively and varied cultural programme (classics to jazz) was also provided to maintain the interests and enthusiasms of the participants.
