Les histoires des tours connues et moins connues relatées dans ce Bulletin spécial de docomomo France éclairent les relations entre le contexte, les ciconstances locales, les situations matérielles et culturelles des immeubles de grande hauteur. La tour comme instrument à la fois économique et symbolique du développement urbain devient rapidement la cible d''une forme de violence critique. La faiblesse des argumentaires dévoile alors le caractère idéologique des débats et explique vraimsemblablement, plus que les autres raisons avancées, les destructions et les customisations de toutes sortes dont les ingrédients les plus courants sont la végétalisation et l''éclairage artificiel. Emmanuel Laurentin, animateur de l’émission La fabrique de l’histoire sur France Culture, a publié chez Bayard en 2010 un modeste ouvrage intitulé À quoi sert l’histoire aujourd’hui ? Il a posé la question en apparence simple à des historiens qu’il a choisis parmi ses invités. Les textes rassemblés tiennent leurs promesses, sauf peut-être sur un point : la quasi-absence de contributions relevant de l’histoire de l’art ou de l’histoire de l’architecture. Deux ou trois au plus pourraient être classées dans ce genre. Si cette absence est liée aux thèmes de l’émission produite par l’animateur, dans laquelle l’art et l’architecture sont relativement peu représentés, elle ne peut manquer de nous interroger, mais également de faire naître quelques frustrations.À quoi sert donc l’histoire de l’architecture aujourd’hui ?

The reader, a contemporary observer of the strong resurgence of the urban tower block, will certainly find critical material of choice in the case studies developed in this new special Bulletin Docomomo France. The genesis, the influence of the models, the singularities, the reception and the future, quite simply the history of theses objects that are scattered around the country like so many village church steeples, concentrating both the hopes and the uncertainties of modernity. The stories of known and lesser-known tower blocks recounted in this Bulletin shed light on the relationships between the contexte, local circumstances, and the material and cultural situations of high-rise buildings. The tower block as both an economic and symbolic instrument of urban development is rapidly becoming the target for a form of critical violence. The weakness of the arguments thus reveals the ideological character of the debates and probably explains, more than the other reasons put forward, the destruction and customization of all kinds, the most common ingredients of which are revegetation and artificial lightninf. Even though the integrity of the residential belfry of the Perret Tower in Amiens could not be preserved, interestinf discoveries are still possible among the precision and tigour of the European Tower in Thionville, the sculptural plasticity of the tower blocks of Grenoble, the sculptural singularity of that of La Duchère or the restrained purism of the Viollet Tower in Angers.
