Philosophy and literature enjoy a close, complex relationship. In der Tradition des Pragmatismus stehend, besteht Shusterman auf der grundlegenden Bedeutung des Somatischen, der Wahrnehmung durch bzw. mit Hilfe des Körpers sowie seiner sensorischen Erfahrungen für ein im philosophischen Sinne ethisches und gutes Leben.Jenseits ontologischer Leib-Seele-Debatten plädiert Shusterman für eine Kultivierung des somatischen Bewußtseins und der Achtsamkeit gegenüber dem lebendigen und empfindenden Körper. Dabei ist die Aufmerksamkeit für Körperliches nicht solipsistisch gedacht: Ästhetische Wahrnehmung und Gestaltung entfalten sich stets im Bezug auf den Anderen und die Gesellschaft.In diesem Buch entwickelt Shusterman seine Theorie in Auseinandersetzung mit sechs PhilosophInnen des 20. Jahrhunderts, in deren Denken der Körper eine Rolle spielt, nämlich M. Foucault, M. Merleau-Ponty, S. de Beauvoir, L. Wittgenstein, W. James und J. Dewey.
