The papers and discussions in this volume were presented in a conference held at the Brookings Institution in November 1963 to explore the problems of appraising the benefits that are likely to accrue from proposed public investment projects. To throw light on this question from several directions, papers were commissioned to deal with it in seven contexts: research and development expenditures, outdoor recreation projects, education programs, federal aviation expenditures, highway programs, urban renewal projects, and public health programs.

This title is a detailed academic monograph that explores the use of linear and non-linear programming in economic theory, specifically applied to the theory of the firm. Originally developed as a doctoral dissertation at the University of California, the study draws heavily on contributions from leading economists and mathematicians. The work acknowledges the influence of George Dantzig, who pioneered linear programming, as well as contributions from Professor G.C. Evans, who provided guidance on mathematical rigor. The monograph also recognizes Professor A.W. Tucker’s foundational work on non-linear programming, which enabled the author’s exploration of quadratic programming applications in monopolistic settings. The research, inspired by and partially funded through a United States Air Force initiative to advance administrative techniques, underscores the practical applications of programming theory within large organizations. This monograph emphasizes both the theoretical advances in economic modeling and the broader relevance of linear and quadratic programming approaches to real-world organizational challenges. This title is part of UC Press's Voices Revived program, which commemorates University of California Press’s mission to seek out and cultivate the brightest minds and give them voice, reach, and impact. Drawing on a backlist dating to 1893, Voices Revived makes high-quality, peer-reviewed scholarship accessible once again using print-on-demand technology. This title was originally published in 1951.

The economic status of the aged is a pressing issue that has emerged as a side effect of social progress. Advances in medicine, public health, and urbanization have led to an increase in life expectancy, with more individuals living to the age of 65 and beyond. However, this progress has created new challenges, such as the lack of opportunities for older workers in a highly mechanized economy and the difficulties faced by retired individuals in urban settings. These challenges have contributed to a new form of poverty among the elderly, despite overall societal wealth. In 1955, approximately 14 million people were aged 65 or older, marking the rise of a significant social class with unique needs and demands. A national survey conducted in 1952 by the Bureau of the Census sought to gather specific information about the economic status of this group, focusing on factors like income, expenses, and financial resources. This study, based on interviews with 3,600 men and women aged 65 and over, was designed to better understand the economic realities faced by older Americans and to inform the development of social policies. The findings of the survey explore key questions, such as why many older individuals are no longer in the labor force and whether they can return to work. Additionally, the survey delves into the financial conditions of the elderly, examining the sources of their income, the challenges they face when income is insufficient, and whether they have any significant financial resources to fall back on. Ultimately, the report provides a snapshot of the economic status of the elderly in 1952, offering valuable insights into the scope of the problem and suggesting areas for further research and policy development. This title was originally published in 1957.

Hair loss is one of the most common conditions encountered in both clinical and aesthetic medicine, and its impact often extends well beyond the physical appearance of patients. While surgical restoration has traditionally garnered the most attention, the field of non-surgical hair restoration has expanded significantly—driven by advances in molecular biology, the development of new therapeutic modalities, and increasing demand for lower-risk, patient-tailored treatments. This book was written to provide a comprehensive, evidence-based overview of non-surgical approaches to hair restoration. It is intended for clinicians, trainees, and specialists seeking a deeper understanding of the available tools and how to use them effectively.

This book reflects Robert Dorfman's important contributions to the analysis of economic theory and public decision making during the last forty years. The central concern of much of Professor Dorfman's career has been social decisions: how to reach them and how to judge them. This has meant that he has worked in a wide range of areas within economics including statistics, economic theory, natural resource and environmental economics, social decisions and the history of economic thought. In more recent papers he has challenged the traditional concepts relating to the maximisation of social welfare. This outstanding collection of essays is a true reflection of the diversity of Robert Dorfman's interests and the depth of his economic knowledge. It will appeal to academics and students interested in economic theory, public sector economics and environmental economics and to historians of economic thought.
