Ferdinand Christian Baur (1792-1860), one of the great innovators in the study of the New Testament, argued that each of its books reflects the interests and tendencies of its author in a particular religio-historical milieu. A critique of the writings must precede any judgments about the historical validity of individual stories about Jesus in the Gospels. Thus Baur could move beyond the impasse created by Strauss's Life of Jesus. Baur demonstrated that the Gospel of John is not a historical document comparable to the Synoptic Gospels and cannot be used to reconstruct the teaching of Jesus, and that the Synoptic Gospels must be read critically and selectively. He applied the same principles to the Epistles, arguing that only four are genuinely Pauline (Galatians, 1 and 2 Corinthians, and Romans).Baur's Lectures on New Testament Theology, delivered in Tübingen during the 1850s, summarize thirty years of his research. The lectures begin with an Introduction on the concept, history, and organization of New Testament theology. Part One is devoted to the teaching of Jesus, which Baur finds most reliably in Matthew. Part Two contains the teaching of the Apostles in three chronological periods. The first period presents the theological frameworks of the Apostle Paul and the Book of Revelation; the second period, the frameworks of Hebrews, the Deutero-Pauline Epistles, James and Peter, the Synoptic Gospels and Acts; and the third period, those of the Pastoral Epistles and the Gospel of John.

This edition makes available an entirely new version of Hegel's lectures on the development and scope of world history. Volume II presents Hegel's surviving manuscripts of his introduction to the lectures and the full transcription of the second series of lectures (1830-31). Hegel gave lecture series on aesthetics or the philosophy of art in various university terms, but never published a book of his own on this topic. His student, H. G. Hotho, compiled auditors' transcripts from these separate lecture series and produced from them the three volumes on aesthetics in the standard edition of Hegel's collected works. Annemarie Gethmann-Siefert has now published one of these transcripts, the Hotho transcript of the 1823 lecture series, and accompanied it with a very extensive introductory essay treating many issues pertinent to a proper understanding of Hegel's views on art. She persuasively argues that the evidence shows Hegel never finalized his views on the philosophy of art, but modified them in significant ways from one lecture series to the next. In addition, she makes the case that Hotho's compilation not only concealed this circumstance, by the harmony he created out of diverse source materials, but also imposed some of his own views on aesthetics, views that differ from Hegel's and that the ongoing interpretation of the aesthetics part of Hegel's philosophy has unfortunately taken to be Hegel's own.This translation of the German volume, which contains the first publication of the Hotho transcript and Gethmann-Siefert's essay, makes these important materials accessible to the English reader, materials that should put the English-speaking world's future understanding and interpretation of Hegel's philosophy of art on a sounder footing.

Fixed point theory concerns itself with a very simple, and basic, mathematical setting. For a functionf that has a setX as bothdomain and range, a ?xed point off isa pointx ofX for whichf(x)=x. Two fundamental theorems concerning ?xed points are those of Banach and of Brouwer. In Banach's theorem, X is a complete metric space with metricd andf:X?X is required to be a contraction, that is, there must existL< 1 such thatd(f(x),f(y))?Ld(x,y) for allx,y?X. Theconclusion is thatf has a ?xed point, in fact exactly one of them. Brouwer'stheorem requiresX to betheclosed unit ball in a Euclidean space and f:X?X to be a map, that is, a continuous function. Again we can conclude that f has a ?xed point. But in this case the set of?xed points need not be a single point, in fact every closed nonempty subset of the unit ball is the ?xed point set for some map. ThemetriconX in Banach'stheorem is used in the crucialhypothesis about the function, that it is a contraction.The unit ball in Euclidean space is also metric, and the metric topology determines the continuity of the function, but the focus of Brouwer's theorem is on topological characteristics of the unit ball, in particular that it is a contractible ?nite polyhedron. The theorems of Banach and Brouwer illustrate the di?erence between the two principal branches of ?xed point theory: metric ?xed point theory and topological ?xed point theory.
