Meteorite research is fundamental to our understanding of the origin and early history of the Solar System. Some meteorites were produced by melting on asteroids, a few are from the Moon and others are martian. Their study yields a chronology of the first 100 million years of Solar System history and provides evidence that our Sun went through a highly radiative, T Tauri stage. This book considers the mechanism and timing of core formation and basaltic volcanism on asteroids and the effects of heating water-rich bodies. Results from meteorite research are placed in a galactic setting, and a theory is proposed for the origin of the planets of our Solar System. This advanced yet succinct introduction provides a classification of meteorites and discusses their ages and origin. It will be valuable to graduate students and scientists in astrophysics, space research, cosmochemistry, geochemistry, isotope geology and earth and planetary sciences.

To the outside world, Opus Dei's stated intention is 'to remind all people that they are called to holiness, especially through work and ordinary life'. But with an elite membership of 80,000 and tentacles reaching around the globe, this secretive sect within the Catholic Church has far greater potential influence. In recent years it has come under criticism from within the Catholic Church and from authorities in the countries where it operates, revealing a more sinister intention: to confront Islam on the world's spiritual battlefields, by whatever means necessary.Their Kingdom Come demonstrates how Opus Dei has forged an unholy alliance with the Mafia, secular powerbrokers and highly placed prelates, with the result that Christian values are being threatened by the malign influences of power politics and big money.Opus Dei's command council runs an immense intelligence network and a vast multinational conglomerate, preparing for what the organisation regards as Christendom's inevitable showdown with radical Islam...

In 1986 professional writer Robert Hutchison became a passenger on a 10,000-mile trip through fourteen countries in a Scania 111. He was sampling the life of the long-haul trucker. The truckers' world was one of long days and nights on the road away from their families, hair-raising tales of accidents and the extreme danger created by murderous driving. He grew to understand why truckers put up with the life - not just for the money and the excitement, but also for their pride in coping whatever the circumstances and for camaraderie. There was, too, the beauty of mountains and lakesides and the strangeness of the desert. Robert's trip with Graham Davies of Whittle International took him through Cold-War Europe to Turkey and then through Iraq during the Iran - Iraq conflict with twenty-mile border queues and frequent police shakedowns. Finally they delivered their cargo of machinery and ovens for making plastic pipes to Al Khobar in Saudi Arabia before heading home after 31 days on the road. This journey was undertaken when the golden age of transport from Europe to the Gulf was coming to an end. Robert's accurate record, first published in 1987, is full of interest, drama and humour, telling the story of a remarkable breed of men. This is the first paperback edition.

A young British officer deserted during the First Afghan War (1839-42) and went to ground in the wilds of Tehri-Garhwal. Frederick 'Pahari'Wilson changed the face of the region forever and became a Himalayan legend. He played a daring role in the Great Game, was witness to the Anglo-Sikh War of 1845 - when the British nearly lost India - and became a pioneering force in the great Indian Railways adventure. Capturing the humour of the petty world of officers'clubs in Meerut, Mussoorie and Shimla, the chill of stiff winds on the high passes into Tibet, and the hardships of life in the remote valleys of Garhwal, The Raja of Harsil is a thrilling account of that tumultuous and exciting period. Driven by personal ambition, Frederick Wilson introduced commercial timbering to the Himalayas and became India's first timber magnate. An avid hunter, ornithologist and botanist, he settled at Harsil, near the source of the Ganges, and shared the lives and destinies of the Garhwali people. He acquired enormous wealth - becoming the richest man in northern India - and famous as the 'raja'of Harsil before falling into disfavour - termed a pariah for plundering Garhwal of its wildlife and natural resources.

A Seattle architect’s speculations on how architectural types—from chapels to lighthouses—narrate memory and lossSeattle-based architect Robert Hutchison’s Memory Houses is a project that investigates mortality and memory through the lens of architecture.Speculatively situated along the banks of the Wye River on the Eastern Shore of Maryland where the architect grew up, architectural typologies such as dwelling, chapel, lighthouse and memorial weave together a spatial narrative about loss and recollection. Distant as well as more recent architectural memories make cameo appearances in the memory houses: the stave churches of Norway and the Great Mosque of Córdoba that Hutchison experienced as a child; the lighthouses of the Chesapeake Bay; the timber grain elevators of the Palouse; the Colosseum and the Santo Stefano Rotondo in Rome. This publication, with a hot-stamped cover and end sheets printed with Hutchinson’s designs, documents the eight buildings that comprise the Memory Houses project, alongside built houses designed by Hutchison’s Seattle-based firm Robert Hutchison Architecture.
