Contributors explore policy, practice, and experience from cities around the world, including Calgary, Christchurch, Dortmund, Vancouver, and others. Written by scholars who live in these cities, chapters offer empirically rich descriptions for opening up new lines of thinking, theorizing, and debate about the sustainable city and its actual material expressions in place. By examining the sustainable city through various analytical framings, contributors urge readers to move from viewing the sustainable city as something everyone can agree on, to a highly politicized and contested process. I named this book "Your face won''t crack if you smile" because that''s the story of my life. I was born and raised in the Chicago area and at 16 years of age, my friends started calling me Smiley. A name that I was tagged with because I never smiled. I was told that if I smiled, my face would crack. As a result, I spent many hours training myself to look beyond all the sadness in the world and twist every sad situation into something funny if it was possible. I read many books on humor to see how they think and then ...try to imitate their way of thinking. I found that most people are basically funny and many things I write about hinge on listening to them say funny things and not realize it. Being a good listener has provided me with a whole file cabinet full of humor.After an operation, a friend caused me to laugh and it was painful. When I told him it hurt when he made me laugh, his reply was, "When I say something funny, don''t listen."Many years have passed now and my face never cracked. I wrote a humor column for a new paper, a number of magazine articles and I was guest speaker at a number of functions because of my humor and not my smarts. My whole life changed for the better because I was called smiley.

Science and technology plays a critical role, but not the only role, in realizing the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals. Not only must we observe the cultural context of scientific and technological interventions, we must respect and support the innovative capacity of those with different backgrounds. To help understand these concerns, this book puts forth the concept of generative justice in science and technology for development. This book presents community case studies concerning technological interventions in global health, the environment, agriculture, and their ethics. Discusses issues around science, technology, and development in the Global South. Describes the redesign of lab-inspired prototypes after field testing with project partners. Engineering and scientific interventions, especially Western interventions, in societies in the majority world, can no longer be left to the scientists and engineers coming from the west or channeling western ideals. In addressing these concerns, this volume brings new thinking, new concepts, and processes and procedures from a variety of disciplines and analytical lenses. It introduces a new development practice, from education to ideation and implementation to assessment. In the chapters, the authors, some of whom are scientists and engineers, but also anthropologists, geographers, and political scientists disentangle the socio-technical relations so that we can better understand the challenges that have befallen the global majority. The authors also integrate educational examples for how to train STEM forward professionals on how they can be agents of change, while maintaining a certain level of humility.
