This book examines international radio news coverage of the four superpower summit meetings between Soviets and Americans from 1987 to 1990. It concentrates on the symbolic constructs used by radio services to report about the summits, including their treatments of the two superpowers, their leaders, and their perspectives as recorded in interviews, press conferences and releases, joint communiques, and briefings. The study assesses the degree of success enjoyed by each of the superpowers in directing the nature of international news coverage, particularly the public relations battle between Mikhail Gorbachev and Ronald Reagan. It also weighs the viability of specific talking points written to direct U.S. summit statements by the National Security Council, and the degree to which news coverage was tainted by propaganda. Finally, it is able to suggest the nature of each service's contribution to diversity in international news flow, and to the ongoing debate about the equality of the international communication and information order.

Communication, Media, and Identity: A Christian Theory of Communication is the first comprehensive theoretical look at the nature of communication from a biblical Christian perspective. This groundbreaking new work discusses the implications of such a theory for interpersonal relations, use of media, and the development of digital culture in the wake of the computer. It also draws widely from the literature of the secular world, critiquing perspectives where necessary and adopting perspectives that are in line with Christian anthropology, epistemology, and ontology. Through this unique lens, the reader is able to understand communication as an art, as a tool for evangelism, and as a unique human activity that allows people to have a stake in the creation. It covers both mediated and non-mediated forms of communication, is sensitive to theological differences within the Christian faith, and examines closely the problem of technology, and especially digital technology, for the practice of communication. As the newest book in the Communication, Culture, and Religion Series, Robert Fortner's work illuminates the theological aspects of communication.

The authors in this book provide share three convictions. First, whatever religious or humanistic foundation we start from, the end result of our communicative efforts should reflect a genuine love for humankind. Second, all human beings, and the social and cultural creations of their hands, reflect values for both good and ill. Those reflecting the best must be encouraged and legitimised, while those that reflect the unfortunate tendencies of people to castigate and condemn the other must be discouraged. And this, communication and culture in all their manifestations are critical in this process. What people say matters. What they do as journalists, broadcasters, filmmakers, advertisers, and teachers matters even more because professional communicators have access to information and audiences who can be encouraged to do either—ethical behaviour or evil.The authors have all been inspired by Clifford Christians and his efforts in creating an environments in which communications scholarship where ethical reflections could thrive.

Fortner’s introduction to media ethics challenges students to confront the impact of the digital world on their lives. Ethics in the Digital Domain addresses the principal ethical issues created or enhanced by life increasingly conducted in digital environments. Chapters discuss social media, the construction and maintenance of identity, the incursion of robots into the workplace and their replacement of work, the increasing reliance on artificial intelligence and the likely future of its implementation, the arrival of alternative realities, such as virtual and augmented reality, even reality after death. Fortner explores what constitutes truth in what many consider a post-truth world, and the implications of our new digital age for the maintenance and conduct of democracy. This book raises significant questions about how the digital age may change our conception of our selves, our friendships and marriage opportunities, our conception of the value and concept of work and career, along with the necessity of navigating through both physical and digital (or artificial) life quickly becoming dominant in the human experience.The second edition includes expanded treatments of truth, politics, identity construction and maintenance, and social change resulting from our increasing existence within digital realities. It includes new chapters on the consequences of incorporating robots into everyday life, and both virtual and augmented realities’ realities for human flourishing. It asks the question of what “human” means in this new set of environments and whether people’s understanding of their own humanity, or that of others, will change as technology advances.Features includea glossary of keywords highlighted throughout the text;case studies in each chapter that allow students to debate significant ethical issues in the digital age;discussion questions at the end of each chapter to further explore the issues raised in each chapter; andfigures that illustrate the realities of this digital age;
