This is the first in a new series of contributed, refereed volumes devoted to research in optimization by Australasian researchers and their collaborators. These volumes are intended to have wide scope and include survey papers by established researchers providing up-to-date information on research directions. This volume contains survey papers on the Clarke subdifferential and differentiability in Banach spaces, algorithms for solving nonsmooth equations, and control parametrization schemes in optimal control. Other topics covered include convex optimization, generalized convexity in optimization, nonsmooth analysis, and algorithms using approximations of sub-differentials.

The third in a three-volume set exploring Problems and Solutions in Medical Physics, this volume explores common questions and their solutions in Radiotherapy. This invaluable study guide should be used in conjunction with other key textbooks in the field to provide additional learning opportunities. One hundred and forty-four solved problems are provided in ten chapters on basic physics topics, including External Beam Therapy Equipment, Photon Beam Physics, Radiation Dosimetry, Treatment Planning for External Beam Radiotherapy, and External Beam Commissioning and Quality Assurance. Each chapter provides examples, notes, and references for further reading to enhance understanding.Features: Consolidates concepts and assists in the understanding and applications of theoretical concepts in medical physics Assists lecturers and instructors in setting assignments and tests Suitable as a revision tool for postgraduate students sitting medical physics, radiation oncology, and radiology science examinationsKwan Hoong Ng, PhD, is Emeritus Professor at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Malaya, Malaysia, and a Fellow of the IOMP and IUPESM.Ngie Min Ung, PhD, is an Associate Professor in Medical Physics at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Malaya, Malaysia.Robin Hill, PhD, is the head of research and education in Radiation Oncology Medical Physics, Chris O’Brien Lifehouse, Sydney, Australia.

This three-volume set explores Problems and Solutions in Medical Physics. These invaluable study guides should be used in conjunction with other key textbooks in the field to provide additional learning opportunities. Volume one explores Diagnostic Imaging Physics and contains problems and solutions on key imaging modalities, exploring X-ray, mammography, and fluoroscopy, in addition to computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, and ultrasonography.Volume two explores Nuclear Medicine and contains problems and solutions on radioactivity and nuclear transformation, radionuclide production and radiopharmaceuticals, non-imaging detectors and counters, instrumentation for gamma imaging, SPECT and PET/CT, imaging techniques, radionuclide therapy, internal radiation dosimetry, and quality control and radiation protection in nuclear medicine.Volume three explores Radiotherapy and contains problems and solutions on external beam therapy equipment, photon beam physics, radiation dosimetry, treatment planning for external beam radiotherapy, and external beam commissioning and quality assurance. Each chapter provides examples, notes, and references for further reading to enhance understanding.Features: Consolidates concepts and assists in the understanding and applications of theoretical concepts in medical physics Assists lecturers and instructors in setting assignments and tests Suitable as a revision tool for postgraduate students sitting medical physics, oncology, and radiology sciences examinations

This volume serves as a study guide and revision resource for postgraduate students preparing for examinations in radiotherapy physics. The problems and solutions presented reflect the typical syllabi adopted by universities and training programmes worldwide. This invaluable study guide should be used in conjunction with other key textbooks in the field to provide additional learning opportunities.Since the publication of the first edition, radiotherapy has continued to advance rapidly, with significant developments in treatment delivery technologies, imaging for radiotherapy, treatment planning methodologies, dosimetry techniques and quality assurance practices. In response to these developments, the second edition has been carefully reviewed and updated. Existing problems have been refined, solutions have been strengthened and expanded where appropriate, and selected content has been revised to better reflect current clinical practice and evolving standards. One hundred and forty-seven solved problems are presented across ten chapters covering core topics, including External Beam Therapy Equipment, Photon Beam Physics, Radiation Dosimetry, Treatment Planning for External Beam Radiotherapy, and External Beam Commissioning and Quality Assurance. The problems are designed to illustrate and augment the underlying theory, while reinforcing fundamental principles to enhance learning and information retention. This book forms part of a four-volume set of medical physics problems and solutions. The companion volumes address diagnostic imaging physics, nuclear medicine physics and radiation protection.Features:Consolidates concepts and assists in the understanding and applications of theoretical concepts in medical physicsSuitable as a revision tool for postgraduate students sitting medical physics, radiation oncology, and radiology science examinationsEach chapter provides examples, notes, and references for further reading to enhance understanding.

Although the monograph Progress in Optimization I: Contributions from Aus tralasia grew from the idea of publishing a proceedings of the Fourth Optimiza tion Day, held in July 1997 at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology, the focus soon changed to a refereed volume in optimization. The intention is to publish a similar book annually, following each Optimization Day. The idea of having an annual Optimization Day was conceived by Barney Glover; the first of these Optimization Days was held in 1994 at the University of Ballarat. Barney hoped that such a yearly event would bring together the many, but widely dispersed, researchers in Australia who were publishing in optimization and related areas such as control. The first Optimization Day event was followed by similar conferences at The University of New South Wales (1995), The University of Melbourne (1996), the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (1997), and The University of Western Australia (1998). The 1999 conference will return to Ballarat University, being organized by Barney's long-time collaborator Alex Rubinov. In recent years the Optimization Day has been held in conjunction with other locally-held national or international conferences. This has widened the scope of the monograph with contributions not only coming from researchers in Australia and neighboring regions but also from their collaborators in Europe and North America.
