On 5 July 2009 a metal-detectorist started to unearth gold objects in a Staffordshire field. Thus began the discovery of the largest hoard of Anglo-Saxon treasure ever found. Consisting of over 1600 items – including fittings from the hilts of swords, fragments from helmets, Christian crosses and magnificent pieces of garnet work – the Staffordshire Hoard has begun to rewrite history. This new and extended edition of the successful title by Kevin Leahy and Roger Bland delves deeper into the story behind the hoard, using the latest research to fill previous gaps in knowledge and turn some of the original ideas about the discovery on their head. Complete with new photography of the cleaned and conserved objects, showing off the stunning and intricate decoration, this book provides a fascinating account of the history and the discovery of this remarkable hoard.

The Canadian National Task Force on Suicide found that suicide rates in Canada, especially among youth, exceed those in other countries around the world, including the United States. Health care professionals and social service providers identify suicide as one of the most important areas in which they need information. Yet, there has been little change in public policies, and support for research is lacking.Compiled by Canada's leading experts on suicide, this collection provides long-awaited information that focuses specifically on Canada. It addresses suicide as a multi-dimensional problem with biological, psychological, cultural, sociological, personal, and philosophical aspects. The contributions integrate both critical analysis and personal experience. There are accounts from Inuit elders, from women who have survived the loss of a family member, and from workers at a crisis line. Among the topics covered are the development of suicide prevention; theory and research; First Nations and Inuit peoples; family, community, and government approaches; distress centres; survivors; and the debate over the right to die.Suicide in Canada does more than simply describe the recent developments in suicidology in Canada - it is a call for action that will save lives. It will be of immediate use to psychiatrists, psychologists, nurses, social workers, crisis workers, and researchers.

This new edition of a volume first published in 1949 provides a clear account of the complex imperial coinage struck between 238 and 253 and is based on many decades of research. It covers the reigns of Gordian III, Philip, Trajan Decius, Trebonianus Gallus and Aemilian with their families and the usurpers Jotapian and Pacatian. The coinage of each emperor is discussed in the introductions to the reigns and a general introduction discusses wider issues relating to the coinage: denominations, weights, metal, reverse types and hoards. As with other recent volumes in the series, medallions are now included. A total of 3,351 types are listed in the catalogue, roughly double the number described in the first edition. These are all illustrated in the plates wherever possible (3,232 coins on 112 plates). There are 172 illustrations in the text. This volume will be an indispensable guide for historians of this crucial period of Roman history.
