Ernst Gottfried Mahrenholz verkorpert alle relevanten Saulen der reprasentativen Demokratie: Sein Studium galt neben den Rechtswissenschaften den beiden universellen Sprachen, Musik und Theologie. Als personlicher Referent des Ministerprasidenten von Niedersachsen begab er sich in die Hohen und Tiefen des Foderalen. Dort erkannte er, welch herausragende Rolle der Informationsqualitat zukommt, ohne die eine "e;Volksherrschaft"e; in Untiefen geraten kann. Als NDR-Direktor in Hannover wurde ihm dies noch bewusster: Die Krafte auch die (partei-)politischen , die auf den offentlich-rechtlichen Rundfunk wirkten, nahmen zu. Angesichts dessen, die Unabhangigkeit des Journalismus zu verteidigen und zu starken, stand bei Mahrenholz obenan. Aus den Perspektiven sowohl der Legislative wie auch der Exekutive lernte er die Grenzen des Foderalen zu erkennen: Zunachst als Landtagsabgeordneter und spater als Kultus- und Medien-Minister wurde ihm bewusst: Sender, die bundesweit Einfluss nehmen konnen, sind wenn "e;checks and balances"e; versagen schwer zu bandigen. Endlich als Vizeprasident des Bundesverfassungsgerichts in Karlsruhe "e;angekommen"e;, galt sein Augenmerk denen, die durch Verfassung und Gesetzgeber (und nicht zuletzt: in den Medien) "e;zu kurz"e; kommen: Ihnen Wahrnehmung zu verschaffen und zu sichern, war Mahrenholz ein zentrales Anliegen. Aufgrund der Erfahrungen in seiner Jugend wusste er: Wer auf Dauer nicht gesehen wird, bricht sich selber Bahn. Allerdings selten zum Wohl aller. Diese Gedenkschrift mochte einen Beitrag dazu leisten, dem Ringen von Ernst Gottfried Mahrenholz um die Unabhangigkeit des Journalismus insbesondere in seiner offentlich-rechtlichen Auspragung Gehor zu verschaffen, grundsatzlich und mit aktuellen Trenddaten.
