Verglichen mit Superhelden-Urgesteinen wie Superman und Batman ist der von Todd McFarlane erdachte Antiheld Spawn, der 1992 das Licht der Comic-Welt erblickte, noch ein Jüngling, der es aber trotz seiner 30 Lenze schon zu beachtlichen Erfolgen gebracht hat. Mehrfach ausgezeichnet, unter anderem mit einem Eintrag im Guinnessbuch der Rekorde für die am längsten von einem einzigen Künstler verfasste und illustrierte Comic-Serie, entwickelte sich SPAWN nicht nur in den USA vom Geheimtipp zum Publikumsliebling. Mittlerweile umfasst das Spawn-Universum auch diverse Spin-offs, wie SCORCHED, KING SPAWN und GUNSLINGER SPAWN, die auch in Deutschland längst erhältlich sind. Und ein Ende der Erfolgsstory ist nicht in Sicht. Zwar gibt es noch keine weiteren Infos zum zweiten Realfilm, der bereits 2017 von Serienschöpfer McFarlane angekündigt wurde, dafür ist bereits das nächste Crossover mit dem Dunklen Ritter Batman in Vorbereitung. Beide Comic-Ikonen ähneln sich, was das düstere Setting betrifft; sind weniger Helden als vielmehr Antihelden, deren moralischer Kompass bisweilen ein wenig ins Trudeln gerät. Der des Ex-Söldners Al Simmons, der durch einen Pakt mit dem Dämon Malebolgia zum Hellspawn wurde, vielleicht noch mehr als der von Batmans Alter Ego Bruce Wayne, der zumindest einen Ehrenkodex hat, demzufolge er niemanden tötet. Simmons wird immerhin von Visionen seiner ermordeten Frau Wanda von Zeit zu Zeit daran erinnert, dass er kein Mörder oder Dämon ist, doch stellt sich die Frage, wie lange er wohl noch in den Abgrund blicken kann, ehe der Abgrund auch in ihn hineinschaut. Vor allem jetzt, wo Simmons die Tore zu Himmel und Hölle versiegelt hat und mit dem Rücken zur Wand steht. Seine Verbündeten hat er fast alle vergrault. Nur Marc Rosen, dessen Körper von Medieval Spawn regelmäßig okkupiert wird, hält noch zu ihm. Aber kann er wirklich verhindern, dass ihm James Downing, der Nächste in der langen Reihe von Hellspawns, mit seinen Verbündeten Overt-Kill und Haunt in den Rücken fällt? Eine weitere Hauptfigur dieses Bandes ist Cogliostro, hinter dem sich kein Geringerer als der Brudermörder Kain verbirgt und der sich erst vor Kurzem als sinistrer Superschurke Sinn neu erfunden hat. Dieser hat herausgefunden, dass sich auf Omega Island möglicherweise ein Zugang zur Hölle und damit zum heiß ersehnten Höllenthron befindet. Kein Wunder, das Clown alias Violator etwas dagegen hat, dass Cogliostro den Riss findet. Federführend für die Serie ist mittlerweile der irischstämmige Autor Rory McConville, der gemeinsam mit dem mexikanischen Künstler Carlo Barberi die Geschicke von SPAWN bestimmt.
