Frequency-Domain Receiver Design for Doubly-Selective Channels discusses broadband wireless transmission techniques, which are serious candidates to be implemented in future broadband wireless and cellular systems, aiming at providing high and reliable data transmission and concomitantly high mobility. This book provides an overview of the channel impairments that may affect performance of single carrier and multi-carrier block transmission techniques in mobile environments. Moreover, it also provides a new insight into the new receiver designs able to cope with double selectivity that affects present and future broadband high speed mobile communication systems.

This book provides the analytical tools to characterize nonlinear distorted multicarrier signals and optimal/sub-optimal receivers employed in high data rate communication systems.Unified Theoretical Analysis of Nonlinear Multicarrier Schemes introduces new optimal and sub-optimal receivers for nonlinear distorted signals that can use nonlinear distortion to improve performance when compared with common receivers. It addresses the analysis of nonlinear systems with stochastic inputs and establishes new receivers designs for multi-carrier communication systems with nonlinearities. The authors also include the characterization and definition of optimum and sub-optimum receivers for nonlinear distorted signals that may use the nonlinear distortion to improve receiver performance over the existing ones. The book also includes a set of applications where the analytical unified method for characterization of nonlinear distortion can be applied. The two final chapters of the book include systems like MIMO OFDM and the extension to optical systems. These techniques are the base of 5G, Wi-fi and future 6G mobile networks. The book will be a valuable resource for design engineers, industrial engineers, applications engineers and researchers working on multi-carrier systems, power amplifiers modelling and design.

Due to their ability to support reliable high quality of service as well as spectral and power efficiency, multicarrier modulation systems have found increasing use in modern communications services. However, one of the main drawbacks of these systems is their vulnerability to nonlinear distortion effects. Analytical Evaluation of Nonlinear Distortion Effects on Multicarrier Signals details a unified approach to well-known analytical results on memoryless nonlinearities that takes advantage of the Gaussian behavior of multicarrier signals.Sharing new insights into the behavior of nonlinearly distorted multicarrier signals, the book begins with a review of the fundamental principles of multicarrier transmission and multicarrier-based systems. Next, it covers well-known results on nonlinear distortion of Gaussian signals and examines the accuracy of the use of Gaussian approximation for evaluating nonlinear effects. It also considers the performance of various multicarrier-based systems in the presence of different types of nonlinear devices. Describes general clipping and filtering techniques to reduce the envelope fluctuations of multicarrier signalsAnalyzes quantization effects caused by the numerical accuracy required in the DFT computationsDiscusses quantization requirements of analog-to-digital converters Redefines loading techniques to take into account nonlinear distortion issues on adaptive multicarrier systemsExamines the impact of nonlinear signal processing techniques for reducing the envelope fluctuations of OFDMA signals Presents performance results for all the discussed applicationsThe book covers the essential principles of multicarrier modulations, including OFDM modulations and other multicarrier schemes. It describes multicarrier modulation systems that will be used in next-generation communications systems and also provides new insight into the behavior of nonlinearly distorted multicarrier signals.Illustrating the application of the nonlinear distortion analysis techniques presented, the book provides you with a wide range of analytical tools to assess the effects of nonlinearities on the performance of multicarrier-based schemes.

Describing efficient transmission schemes for broadband wireless systems, Transmission Techniques for Emergent Multicast and Broadcast Systems examines advances in transmission techniques and receiver designs capable of supporting the emergent wireless needs for multimedia broadcast and multicast service (MBMS) requirements. It summarizes the research and development taking place in wireless communications for multimedia MBMS and addresses the means to improved spectral efficiency to allow for increased user bit rate, as well as increased capacity of the digital cellular radio network. The text highlights essential requirements for new services, providing a clear understanding of the corresponding fundamentals and theory needed to fulfill such requirements. Although the schemes and transmission and detection techniques presented are applicable to a wide range of digital communication systems, including wireless, cellular, and satellite, the text maintains a focus on multimedia services using multicast and broadcast techniques. It also: Reports on important enhancements, including transmission techniques, receiver designs, and multi-resolution schemes for modern broadband wireless systems Covers key aspects in the development of emergent services to support the requirements of new services Discusses the transition from Wideband Code Division Multiple Access (WCDMA) to block transmission techniques Considers advanced receivers such as iterative (turbo) equalization schemes for these techniquesThis complete resource includes coverage of Multiple Input–Multiple Output (MIMO), hierarchical constellations, multi-resolution transmission, macro-diversity principles, and different frequency reuse schemes. It also proposes advances for different propagation and multi-user environments, using both WCDMA and Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiple Access (OFDMA). The text concludes by explaining how to effectively combine these techniques and enhancements for the purpose of implementing the evolved MBMS (E-MBMS).

Future broadband wireless communication systems are expected to be able to offer new and powerful services enabling fast transmission rates of several tens of Mbit/s. This is an ambitious challenge especially for mobile communication systems since these systems should be able to cope with severely time dispersive channels, associated to the signal multipath propagation. Moreover, these systems should have high spectral and power efficiencies, as well as high capacity and flexibility. Spread spectrum techniques, particularly coded division multiple access (CDMA) techniques allow high capacity and flexibility, continuous transmission requiring low-peak power requirements for the amplifiers, as well as some robustness against fading and time-dispersion effects associated with the multipath propagation. When employed in prefix assisted (PA) block transmission schemes combined with frequency-domain receiver implementations they become especially interesting for broadband wireless systems. In Frequency-Domain Multiuser Detection for CDMA Systems the use of PA block transmission is considered in the context of both DS (Direct Sequence) and MC (Multicarrier) CDMA schemes. The main goal is the study of frequency-domain multiuser detection techniques with iterative signal detection/decoding techniques, also in combination with estimation and cancelation of nonlinear distortion effects. The receiver structures are suitable to scenarios with high interference levels and strongly time-dispersive channels.

The desire for precise knowledge about the location of a moving object at any time instant has motivated a great deal of scientific research recently. This is owing to a steady expansion of the range of enabling devices and technologies, as well as the need for seamless solutions for location-based services. Besides localization accuracy, a common requirement for emerging solutions is that they are cost-abstemious, both in terms of the financial and computational cost. Hence, development of localization strategies from already deployed technologies, e.g., from different terrestrial radio frequency sources is of great practical interest. Amongst other, these include localization strategies based on received signal strength (RSS), time of arrival, angle of arrival (AoA) or a combination of them. RSS-AoA-based Target Localization and Tracking in Wireless Sensor Networks presents recent advances in developing algorithms for target localization and tracking, reflecting the state-of-the-art algorithms and research achievements in target localization and tracking based on hybrid (RSS-AoA) measurements.Technical topics discussed in the book include:Centralized RSS-AoA-based Target LocalizationDistributed RSS-AoA-based Target LocalizationRSS-AoA-based Target Tracking via Maximum A Posteriori EstimatorRSS-AoA-based Target Tracking via Kalman FilterRSS-AoA-based via Sensor NavigationThis book is of interest for personnel in telecommunications and surveillance industries, military, smart systems, as well as academic staff and postgraduate/research students in telecommunications, signal processing, and non-smooth and convex optimization.
