The exhibition A Fact Has No Appearance explores the impact of new ideas on art in Southeast Asia during the 1970s through the case studies of three artists: Johnny Manahan, Redza Piyadasa, and Tan Teng-Kee, all of whom have been recognised for breaking ground in Southeast Asian modern art. With essays that deliberate upon the impact of their works during the 1970s as well as a rich documentation of their works and archival materials, this catalogue presents a concise study of the three artists and also offers insight into how conceptual art practices took hold in this region.

Yayoi Kusama is one of the world's most influential artists, having played a crucial role in key art movements of the 20th and 21st centuries. Accompanying the first major survey of Kusama's work in Southeast Asia, this catalogue features essays by curators from National Gallery Singapore and Queensland Art Gallery | Gallery of Modern Art, a biographical timeline and beautifully reproduced images of her works.

National heroes and enigmatic figures, 19th-century painters Raden Saleh and Juan Luna traversed the colonial territories of Southeast Asia and the imperial cities of Europe. Their agile navigation of these competing positions resulted in dramatic paintings that are today animated as allegories of anti-colonialism in their respective homelands of Indonesia and the Philippines. Published on the occasion of an exhibition at National Gallery Singapore, this catalogue features over a hundred full-colour image plates of their works: from sweeping Orientalist hunting scenes to gritty Realist portrayals of the working class. Essays and biographical timelines examine each artist’s practices, as well as frame them within the cultural and social dynamics of the 19th century.

Rirkrit Tiravanija has created the second Ng Teng Fong Roof Garden Commission artwork for National Gallery Singapore. Featuring an interlocking bamboo structure with a simple wooden tea house at its centre, this site- specific installation springs from the artist’s interest in fostering social engagement and human interaction through art. With homes in Chiang Mai, New York and Berlin, Tiravanija’s nomadic life is a constant negotiation of cultures, and a source of inspiration for his practice. This catalogue illuminates this influential artist’s fascinating oeuvre through newly commissioned essays and full-colour images of the installation.
