This 2010 book was the first devoted to the theory of p-adic wavelets and pseudo-differential equations in the framework of distribution theory. This relatively recent theory has become increasingly important in the last decade with exciting applications in a variety of fields, including biology, image analysis, psychology, and information science. p-Adic mathematical physics also plays an important role in quantum mechanics and quantum field theory, the theory of strings, quantum gravity and cosmology, and solid state physics. This volume contains the proceedings of the Kovalevsky symposium held in Stockholm 2000. The first part is devoted to the life of S. Kovalevsky, the first female professor of mathematics, who influenced the development of European science during the last century. Historical notes by G. Mittag-Leffler and copies of official documents related to her life as well as several articles on her life and mathematics are presented. The main articles by J.-E. Bjork describe her life and professorship at Stockholm University. Part two of the volume contains 23 contributions in pure and applied mathematics, and in mathematical physics resulting from the lectures delivered within the program of the symposium.

This volume highlights the analysis on noncompact and singular manifolds within the framework of the cone calculus with asymptotics. The three papers at the beginning deal with parabolic equations, a topic relevant for many applications. The first article presents a calculus for pseudodifferential operators with an anisotropic analytic parameter. The subsequent paper develops an algebra of Mellin operators on the infinite space-time cylinder. It is shown how timelike infinity can be treated as a conical singularity. In the third text - the central article of this volume - the authors use these results to obtain precise information on the long-time asymptotics of solutions to parabolic equations and to construct inverses within the calculus. There follows a factorization theorem for meromorphic symbols: it is proven that each of these can be decomposed into a holomorphic invertible part and a smoothing part containing all the meromorphic information. It is expected that this result will be important for applications in the analysis of nonlinear hyperbolic equations. The final article addresses the question of the coordinate invariance of the Mellin calculus with asymptotics.
