Over the last two decades, topological ideas have found increasingly more applications in quantum field theory. The participation of such leading mathematicians as M Atiyah, R Bott, G Segal, and I Singer, is a testmony to the deep interplay of mathematics and theoretical physics.

The Salamfest was held to honor Prof Abdus Salam whose scientific contribution to the development and dissemination of physics has deeply influenced the course of scientific advancement. The aim of this interdisciplinary conference was to bring together experts in quantum field theory and condensed matter physics to survey the latest exciting developments in this border-line field, such as the Chern-Simons field theory and quantum hall effect, anyon superconductivity, Yang-Baxter equations and quantum groups, conformal field theory and multi-channel kondo effect, matrix models and quantum gravity, etc.This set of proceedings contains brief reviews contributed by leading experts in the field.

This volume is a collection of papers presented at the Summer School, ICTP, 14 June - 30 July. Topics covered include: comparing the elementary quark versus the preonic approach to unification, quark matter and nuclear collisions and effective actions and topological string amplitudes.

Topics covered include: exact results for two-dimensional N=2 supersymmetric theories; a string project in multicolour QCD; matrix models and string theory; black hole evaporation and quantum gravity; gauge theory and lattice strings; and quantization of mirror symmetry.
