The recent development of narrow spectrum width semiconductor laser and planar optical waveguide devices offers us the possibility of a new generation of lightwave based communication systems. This book covers the range of technical issues relating to lightwave technologies using high coherence lightwaves, emphasising the system aspects of the new generation lightwave communication technologies such as optical frequency division multiplexing and coherent detection. Dr Shimada has led the NTT group for advanced lightwave technology since 1987, having been a leading researcher in optical communications with NTT since 1975.
