Through close readings of authors such as John Berger, Elizabeth Bowen, Anne Carson, Siri Hustvedt, and Michael Ondaatje, the volume proposes a theory of ‘tactile poetics’ in order to examine the co-implication of touch and writing in a range of genres including the novel, poetry, short fiction, autobiography and film. Drawing on insights from Didier Anzieu, Hélène Cixous, Jacques Derrida, Sigmund Freud and Jean-Luc Nancy, Tactile Poetics examines the ‘skin-effects’ of language and the ‘law of tact’ that always interrupts contact. Celebrating the intersections between creative and critical writing and exploring diverse literary textures, this book deviates from grasping and licking to false hands and phantom limbs, considering the effects of spectral contact on how we ‘hand on’ ways of thinking about reading and writing.

In 1914, the East London Federation of Suffragettes, led by Sylvia Pankhurst, split from the WSPU. Sylvia’s mother and sister, Emmeline and Christabel, had encouraged her to give up her work with the poor women of East London – but Sylvia refused. Besides campaigning for women to have an equal right to vote from their headquarters in Bow, the ELFS worked on a range of equality issues which mattered to local women: they built a toy factory, providing work and a living wage for local women; they opened a subsidized canteen where women and children could get cheap, nutritious food; and they launched a nursery school, a crèche, and a mother-and-baby clinic. The work of the Federation (and ‘our Sylvia’, as she was fondly known by locals) deserves to be remembered, and this book, filled with astonishing first-hand accounts, aims to bring this amazing story to life.

Tapping into a wide range of the protocols, practices and forms of the telephone and its extended apparatus – from analogue to digital; from corded candlestick to flat, reflective interface; and from buzzing switchboard to encrypting scrambler phone – this volume examines how the literary telephone connects, and disrupts, our relationship with such prevalent and compelling preoccupations as desire, resistance, responsibility, surveillance, political coercion and warfare. Across seventeen chapters, it brings together readings informed by literary criticism and theory, poetics, sound studies, material culture, media archaeology and cultural history.
