The book deals with qualitative analysis of the mathematical model of flow of a viscous incompressible fluid around a translating and rotating body. The considered mathematical model, which represents the description of the flow in a coordinate system attached to the body, is derived from the Navier–Stokes equations by means of an appropriate transformation. The core of the book is the mathematical theory of the transformed equations. Most of the text is devoted to the theory of the linearized versions of these equations (i.e. the Stokes- and Oseen-type equations), because they play a fundamental role in the theory of the complete nonlinear system.Considering strong, weak, and very weak solutions, we present the L2 and Lq theories and the weighted space theory (with Muckenhaupt's weights) in the whole space and in an exterior domain. The book also contains the spectral analysis of the associated linear Stokes-Oseen-type operators and the information on semigroups generated by these operators, and related resolvent estimates. Moreover, the book describes the asymptotic behavior of solutions and leading profiles of solutions for linear and as well as nonlinear systems.Further, the book contains studies of the problem with artificial boundary (important in numerical analysis), an introduction to the theory of the corresponding complete nonlinear system in both steady and nonsteady cases, a brief description of the situation when the rotation is not parallel to the velocity at infinity and necessary estimates of the related Oseen kernels.

The book collects the most significant contributions of the outstanding Czech mathematician Jindřich Nečas, who was honoured with the Order of Merit of the Czech Republic by President Václav Havel. Starting with Nečas’s brief biography and short comments on his role in the beginnings of modern PDE research in Prague, the book then follows the periods of his research career. The first part is devoted to the linear theory of partial differential equations. Its topics include the variational approach to linear boundary value problems and the Rellich - Nečas inequalities, together with their applications to boundary regularity. The second part is concerned with the regularity for nonlinear elliptic systems, which are related to Hilbert’s 19th and 20th problems. The third part focuses on Nonlinear Functional Analysis and its applications to non-linear PDEs, while the last part deals with topics in the mathematical theory of various models in Continuum Mechanics, including elasticity and plasticity, the Navier-Stokes equations, transonic flows, and multipolar fluids. The editorial contributions were written by: I. Babuška, P. Ciarlet, P. Drábek, M. Feistauer, I. Hlaváček, J. Jarušek, O. John, J. Kristensen, A. Kufner, J. Málek, G. Mingione, Š. Nečasová, M. Pokorný, P. Quittner, T. Roubíček, G. Seregin and J. Stará.

This book presents, in a methodical way, updated and comprehensive descriptions and analyses of some of the most relevant problems in the context of fluid-structure interaction (FSI). Generally speaking, FSI is among the most popular and intriguing problems in applied sciences and includes industrial as well as biological applications. Various fundamental aspects of FSI are addressed from different perspectives, with a focus on biomedical applications. More specifically, the book presents a mathematical analysis of basic questions like the well-posedness of the relevant initial and boundary value problems, as well as the modeling and the numerical simulation of a number of fundamental phenomena related to human biology. These latter research topics include blood flow in arteries and veins, blood coagulation and speech modeling. We believe that the variety of the topics discussed, along with the different approaches used to address and solve the corresponding problems, will help readers to develop a more holistic view of the latest findings on the subject, and of the relevant open questions. For the same reason we expect the book to become a trusted companion for researchers from diverse disciplines, such as mathematics, physics, mathematical biology, bioengineering and medicine.

This book aims to face particles in flows from many different, but essentially interconnected sides and points of view. Thus the selection of authors and topics represented in the chapters, ranges from deep mathematical analysis of the associated models, through the techniques of their numerical solution, towards real applications and physical implications. The scope and structure of the book as well as the selection of authors was motivated by the very successful summer course and workshop "Particles in Flows'' that was held in Prague in the August of 2014. This meeting revealed the need for a book dealing with this specific and challenging multidisciplinary subject, i.e. particles in industrial, environmental and biomedical flows and the combination of fluid mechanics, solid body mechanics with various aspects of specific applications.

The book provides a comprehensive, detailed and self-contained treatment of the fundamental mathematical properties of problems arising from the motion of viscous incompressible fluids around rotating obstacles. It offers a new approach to this type of problems. We derive the fundamental solution of the steady case and we give pointwise estimates of velocity and its gradient (first and second one). Each chapter is preceded by a thorough discussion of the investigated problems, along with their motivation and the strategy used to solve them. The book will be useful to researchers and graduate students in mathematics, in particular mathematical fluid mechanics and differential equations.
