In this book the authors present the basic formalism to describe the electromagnetic field and its interaction with nuclear matter. Among the areas studied are pion production, polarization phenomena, and photonuclear reactions at intermediate energies. At a time when data will become available from many newly commissioned laboratories both in Europe and the USA, this book offers a timely presentation of the current understanding of the electromagnetic response of atomic nuclei. Its introductory approach and rich bibliography will make it invaluable to postgraduate students and researchers.

This volume contains the duly-submitted invited and contributed papers presented at the Fourth International Conference on Perspectives in Hadronic Physics. The conference was held at the Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP), Trieste, Italy, from May 12th to 16th, 2003, and was attended by about 100 scientists from 20 countries. This conference discussed the state of the art of experimental and theoretical investigations of hadronic systems, from nucleons to nuclei and dense nuclear matter, in terms of the relevant underlying degrees of freedom. The fourth conference focused on those experimental and theoretical topics that have been the object of intensive investigations in the last few years . All papers appearing in the volume have been refereed and properly edited.

This volume contains the invited and contributed papers presented at the Fourth International Conference on Perspectives in Hadronic Physics and sent to the Editors within the deadline. The Conference was held at the Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP), Trieste, Italy, from May 12th to 16th, 2003, and was attended by about 100 scientists from 20 countries. The series ofConferences on Perspectives on Hadronic Physics takes place every two years since 1997 and follows the seven Workshops on Perspectives in Nuclear Physics at Intermediate Energies, organized every two years at ICTP since 1983. The aim of these Conferences is to discuss the status-of-the-art concerning the experimental and theoretical investigations of hadronic systems, from nucleons to nuclei and dense nuclear matter, in terms of the relevant underlying degrees of freedom. For such a reason the Fourth Conference has been focused on those experimental and theoretical topics which have been in the last few years the object of intensive investigations, viz. the various approaches employed to describe the structure of hadrons in terms of QCD and QCD inspired models, the recent developments in the treatment of the properties and propagations of hadronic states in the medium, the relevant progress done in the solution of the few- and many- hadron problems, the recent results in the experimental investigation of dense hadronic matter and, last but not least, the physics programs of existing Laboratories and the suggested projects for new Facilities.

A series of new and relevant experimental results are here presented to the community for the first time. In particular, we refer to the measurement of the neutron spin structure functions by the SLAC (E142) and CERN (SMC) collaborations; the first results from MAMI on experiments with tagged photons (A1 collaboration), on electroproduction of multi-hadron final states (A2 collaboration) and the neutron form factor (A3 collaboration); the experiments on strangeness photoproduction at ELSA; the polarization experiments at Bates on the neutron form factor and nuclear response functions and the photon and electron scattering data obtained by the Genova-Frascati Jet Target collaboration.Focused on the study of spin observables and exclusive processes at high momenta, the following sessions were held: The Neutron Form Factors; Spin Structure Functions; Exclusive Processes at High υ and Q2. Deep Inelastic Scattering; Spin Observables; One- and Two-Nucleon Knockout at Low and Intermediate Energies; Excitation of Baryons Resonances and Strangeness.

This book focuses on the latest theoretical and experimental results and future perspectives regarding electromagnetic and hadronic physics at intermediate energies. Nucleon form factors and spin structure functions, deep-inelastic scattering, excited baryons and mesons, and correlations in nuclei are discussed. Many new results and the scientific programmes of the different laboratories in Europe and North America are also presented. A special section is devoted to relativistic approaches to hadrons and nuclei at intermediate energies.

This volume discusses theoretical and experimental activities in the investigation of nucleon and nuclear structure by electromagnetic and hadronic probes at intermediate and high energies. The focus is on laboratory activities, recent progress concerning the structure of hadrons, relativistic many-body approaches, deep inelastic scattering and correlations in nuclei.

The Cortona Conference is a biennial meeting of all Italian groups from about 20 universities who are active in theoretical nuclear physics.This volume presents the main achievements and perspectives of Italian theoretical nuclear physics, with particular reference to the last two years.The first part contains the invited talks on: (1) Nuclear structure, (2) Light nuclei physics, (3) Hadronic degrees of freedom, (4) Nuclear physics with electroweak probes, (5) Nuclear dynamics and nuclear matter, and (6) First results about the AIACE experiment. Furthermore it includes two longer communications on: (7) Nuclear physics with exotic beams, and (8) Solution of the folding problem in protein models. The second part contains contributed papers.

The 9th Conference on Problems in Theoretical Nuclear Physics was organized as part of the project “Theoretical Physics of Nuclei and Many-Body Systems” involving 17 Italian universities and sponsored by the Italian Ministry of Research and University.This volume includes the invited papers on the main subjects of the project and all the individual contributions on special topics. It reviews the work performed in the last two years by the participating Italian community of nuclear theorists. In addition, national and international perspectives are focussed by a panel on the future programmes of the large Italian laboratories and of the experimental community, as well as in a general review by A Faessler.
