A four-day conference, "Functional Analysis on the Eve of the Twenty­ First Century," was held at Rutgers University, New Brunswick, New Jersey, from October 24 to 27, 1993, in honor of the eightieth birthday of Professor Israel Moiseyevich Gelfand. He was born in Krasnye Okna, near Odessa, on September 2, 1913. Israel Gelfand has played a crucial role in the development of functional analysis during the last half-century. His work and his philosophy have in fact helped to shape our understanding of the term "functional analysis" itself, as has the celebrated journal Functional Analysis and Its Applications, which he edited for many years. Functional analysis appeared at the beginning of the century in the classic papers of Hilbert on integral operators. Its crucial aspect was the geometric interpretation of families of functions as infinite-dimensional spaces, and of op­ erators (particularly differential and integral operators) as infinite-dimensional analogues of matrices, directlyleading to the geometrization of spectral theory. This view of functional analysis as infinite-dimensional geometry organically included many facets of nineteenth-century classical analysis, such as power series, Fourier series and integrals, and other integral transforms.

This is Volume 2 of a two-volume set which contains 18 invited papers in honour of the 80th birthday of mathematician Israel M. Gelfand, who is considered to have played an important role in the development of functional analysis in the latter half of the 20th century. The papers cover areas in which Gelfand has a strong interest, including geometric quantum field theory, representation theory, combinatorial structures underlying various "continuous" constructions, quantum groups and geometry. This second volume contains the more "geometric" papers.

This collection of articles serves to commemorate the legacy of Joseph D'Atri, who passed away on April 29, 1993, a few days after his 55th birthday. Joe D' Atri is credited with several fundamental discoveries in ge­ ometry. In the beginning of his mathematical career, Joe was interested in the generalization of symmetrical spaces in the E. Cart an sense. Symmetric spaces, differentiated from other homogeneous manifolds by their geomet­ rical richness, allows the development of a deep analysis. Geometers have been constantly interested and challenged by the problem of extending the class of symmetric spaces so as to preserve their geometrical and analytical abundance. The name of D'Atri is tied to one of the most successful gen­ eralizations: Riemann manifolds in which (local) geodesic symmetries are volume-preserving (up to sign). In time, it turned out that the majority of interesting generalizations of symmetrical spaces are D'Atri spaces: natu­ ral reductive homogeneous spaces, Riemann manifolds whose geodesics are orbits of one-parameter subgroups, etc. The central place in D'Atri's research is occupied by homogeneous bounded domains in en, which are not symmetric. Such domains were discovered by Piatetskii-Shapiro in 1959, and given Joe's strong interest in the generalization of symmetric spaces, it was very natural for him to direct his research along this path.

This selection of papers of I. Piatetski-Shapiro represents almost 50 years of his mathematical activity. Included are many of his major papers in harmonic analysis, number theory, discrete groups, bounded homogeneous domains, algebraic geometry, automorphic forms, and automorphic L-functions.The papers in the volume are intended as a representative and accurate reflection of both the breadth and depth of Piatetski-Shapiro's work in mathematics.
