På samma oefterhärmliga sätt som han tidigare skildrat matematikens och kodernas historia berättar han om de män och kvinnor som utvecklade teorin om universums uppkomst, Big Bang, Stora smällen. Vi får möta Eratosthenes, som 250 f. Kr. med hjälp av skuggan av en käpp räknade ut jordens omkrets och avståndet till solen. Giordano Bruno hävdade att universum var oändligt och fick som tack möta döden på bålet i Rom år 1600. Den döva Henrietta Leavitt bevisade med sin skarpa syn att Vintergatan inte var den enda galaxen. För detta ville professor Gösta Mittag-Leffler tilldela henne Nobelpriset 1924, men tyvärr hade hon dött tre år tidigare, okänd och ouppskattad. Den notoriske bråkmakaren Fred Hoyle myntade 1950 namnet Stora smällen i ett försök att vara sarkastisk eftersom han absolut inte trodde på den.
